Spreading kindness
Moorestown Girl Scout Troop creates
Kindness Benches for schools, community
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
For a Junior Girl Scout, the
highest honor achievable is the
Bronze Award. It is acquired by
working together as a troop, putting in at least 20 hours of work
and doing something to better the
community. The girls of Troop
21279 wanted to give back to the
community in a way that would
help their peers as well as stay in
the community for years to come.
Troop 21279 came up with the
idea to create Kindness Benches,

which are benches for the youth

to sit on when they are lonely and
want a friend, or to just spread
friendship in general. The girls
created five benches, which were
given to all of the Moorestown
public elementary schools, the
Upper Elementary School and the
New Albany Recreation Center.
A lot of people were saying
that it was a good thing and that it
was really impressive how much
we could get done. We think it is
no big deal. But when you actualplease see SCOUTS, page 23

After coming up short of a sectional championship in 2015, the

Moorestown High School boys
lacrosse team got back on top of
the South Jersey Group III mountain in 2016.
The Quakers had a successful
season, finishing the year 18-4
and defeating Clearview Regional
High School, 12-9, on May 28 to
win the South Jersey Group III
championship. It is Moorestowns
second sectional title in three
years.
Head coach Baron Wallenhurst
said the 2016 Quakers were motivated to get back to the sectional

championship after falling short

against Shawnee High School, 8-7,
in the 2015 South Jersey Group III
title game.
This year, the Quakers relied
on a number of players who
played smaller roles in previous
seasons.
A lot of the guys coming in
didnt get a ton of time last year,
Wallenhurst said. We were pretty much new. These guys rose to
the challenge. They really worked
hard in the offseason.
One of the biggest success stories from Moorestowns 2016 team
was senior Bryan Wright.
Wrights high school career had
been plagued by injuries. After
missing all of his sophomore sea-

son and a decent chunk of 2015,

Wright emerged as a force for
Moorestown, leading the Quakers
with 64 goals.
The Quakers also got plenty of
offense from junior Frankie Labetti, who scored 54 goals for
Moorestown. Labetti had a number of games where he registered
five or more points, including an
April game against Cherokee
High School where he tallied
seven goals and added three assists.
There were times where he
just dominated games, Wallenhurst said of Labetti.
Wallenhurst described this
years team as a solid combinaplease see TEAM, page 27

Threat of new mosquito-borne disease, Zika, stresses prevention importance

he threat of mosquito-borne
disease is nothing new. Every
year, mosquitoes breed in our
area as the weather warms, and with it
comes the possibility of contracting a
disease they carry. Malaria, dengue
fever, yellow fever and the one that
has affected our locale in the recent
past West Nile virus all come from
those annoying little buggers.
This year, a new disease is a
threat the Zika virus. Its not actually new; it was first discovered in the
Zika Forest in Uganda in 1947, but scientists long considered it nothing serious. Fewer than 20 cases of human
contraction of Zika were documented
before 2007.
In May 2015, the Pan American
Health Organization issued an alert regarding the first confirmed Zika virus
infection in Brazil. By February, the
World Health Organization declared
the virus a Public Health Emergency
of International Concern. Today, its a
full-blown epidemic in some tropical
countries such as Brazil, and even U.S.

territories such as Puerto Rico.

To date, 618 cases of Zika virus have
been reported in the U.S., with 195 in
pregnant women more on that later
although most cases, to this point, have
been international travelers contracting the disease elsewhere and returning home.
But why should we be more concerned about Zika over former mosquito-borne diseases? First, its hard to
detect if you have it; symptoms of
fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis are usually mild and last for a few
days. Most people usually dont get
sick enough to even realize they have
it. And in addition, theres no readilyavailable test to see if someone has it.
Second, a direct link has been made
between pregnant women having Zika

giving birth to children with the serious birth defect called microcephaly, as
well as other severe fetal brain defects.
And third, unlike the other mosquito diseases, Zika can be sexually transmitted.
With a wet spring already upon us,
the mosquitoes are here earlier than
they normally are, and the hot weather
still to come could produce a bad
recipe for our area. Just last week, a
baby was born in New Jersey with microcephaly, contracted from a Zika-infected mother.
Women of child-bearing age, and
their partners, need to pay extra special attention this summer. We are not
suggesting you stay indoors, but following simple mosquito-prevention
techniques is more important this
summer than ever. Resources are available in many places, but the best may
be at www.cdc.gov/zika/prevention.
Take steps now to prevent mosquito
bites this summer. Even if youre not
planning to have a child, wouldnt it be
nice to still not be bitten?

Being part of Moorestown
community a joy
On May 15, Pentecost Sunday, I completed 22 years of pastoral ministry at First
Presbyterian Church in Moorestown.

It has been a joy to be part of a community that has reflected the love and faithfulness of God in countless ways. May our
care of one another and those who have
less than we do be defining attributes of
our town.

I write with thanksgiving for you and

the One who is our refuge and strength, a
very present help in times of trouble
(Psalm 46). God bless you in these coming
summer months!

Trinity Episcopal Church seeks

donations for Christmas in July
As part of its community outreach efforts, the members of the
vestry and the outreach committee of Trinity Episcopal Church
in Moorestown are pleased to announce a new parish initiative
called Christmas in July. On
July 25, 60 adults and children in
need will be transported to Ocean
City for a day of fun, rest and relaxation.
While many of us have access
to delightful days and vacations
at the Jersey shore, countless others descend into more acute, miserable levels of need and poverty, said Trinity Interim Rector
the Rev. Hentzi Elek. Area food
pantries and clothing supplies
dry-up and children go hungry
because their guaranteed meals
have stopped no school, no
food.
Trinity has a long history of
helping people in need. Beginning in 2007, Trinity answered
the call for families and individuals seeking food and basic living
supplies from Moorestown and in
the surrounding towns/cities of
Camden, Riverside, Willingboro,

donations, particularly at Christmas when Trinity parishioners
adopt families.
It is our desire to give these
families and individuals a day off
from lifes challenges, said Trinity Deacon Leslie Mazzacano. We
realize the struggles they face
every day and we know that by offering them three solid meals and
a day of rest, they will be re-energized to continue to care for themselves and their families in the
best and most dignified way possible.
Trinitys outreach committee
raised more than $18,000 last year.
In addition to the Christmas in
July special event, the church
provides ongoing support for
many area nonprofits, including
the Cathedral Soup Kitchen, the
Christian Caring Center, the
Food Bank of South Jersey and
Habitat for Humanity to name a
few.
The committee has set an aggressive fundraising budget of
$25,000 to support Christmas in
July and is only a few thousand
dollars short of reaching its goal.

the community is a pretty big
deal, Katherine Braddzock said.
When Mayor Phil Garwood announced it was once again a Year
of Kindness in Moorestown, the
girls were inspired to spread
kindness as well. The girls brainstormed to think of an idea that
would help the community for
years to come as well as represent
kindness. They soon remembered
the concept of a Buddy Bench, or
in this case a Kindness Bench,
and thought that was the perfect
way to accomplish their goal.
With the help of parents and
other generous donors, the girls
acquired more benches than originally planned. At first they
thought two would be good to add
to the UES. However, five were acquired, so they had a lot of work
cut out for them.
Luckily, the benches were in
pretty good condition and just
needed cleaning and sanding. The
troop primed the benches, painted them and added a protective
coating to prevent weathering.
The girls ended up putting in
way more hours than required for
the Bronze Award, working more
than 20 hours each. Each bench
was painted uniquely, some even
representing the location the
benches were going to.
The girls agreed the hardest
part was sanding the benches.
However, they had more favorite
and fun moments than hard ones.
They loved working together, designing the way the benches
would look and painting them.
My favorite part was when we
all came together one day and we
all just started washing, painting
and sanding them. We had a lot of
fun doing it. I think every kid
should be able to do this because
it is a lot of fun, Isabella Baules
said.
When they were finished, the
girls were proud and amazed at

Hudson said.
The girls wanted it to be known
that it wasnt just them who did
the work. A lot of their parents
and community members helped.
Its not just us. Its all of our
troop leaders and parents who
helped us along the way, Braddzock said.
Our moms are superheroes,
all of the girls said.
So far, the feedback on the
benches has all been positive.
They received a lot of positive
feedback from passersby at
Moorestown Day and on pictures
on social media. Their parents
said they were extremely proud of
the girls.
When the girls dropped off the
bench at George C. Baker Elementary
School,
Principal
Michele Rowe thought it was the
perfect addition to the school and
was a great accomplishment by
the girls. For now the bench is in

the foyer under a plaque that says

many positive things. Eventually,
it may go outside of the kindergarten for the students to use.
The purpose of the bench will
fit perfectly here and the students
will absolutely use the bench.
Hopefully well have it outside
I think that the kids will love it. It
is perfect for this age where we
try to teach kindness, adding to
our lesson plan, Rowe said.
The girls hope the benches remain and are taken care of, but
also that even without the benches the message of spreading kindness will always be remembered.
I hope in the future, that when
we are not here to help out, that
people will take care of the
benches, and if they do get in bad
shape will stay in good shape. So
that everyone in our community
can get along more, Reagan
Reiner said.
I hope they inspire people to
give back, Ava Eaise said.
Its not all about the benches.
It is about spreading kindness;
you can do it without the benches, Alessia McCracken said.

younger players. He said seniors
such as David Shore and Ross
Lazarus stepped up to larger roles
this year, while the play of
younger players such as sophomore Judah Hicks helped set up a
foundation for future seasons.
The team bought in from day
one, Wallenhurst said. They
had a goal and we wanted to make
sure we met that goal. They made
practice fun, just because they

worked so hard.
Moorestown was playoff-ready
well before the postseason started. Playing in the Skyline Conference against many of North Jerseys top teams such as Bridgewater-Raritan High School and Hunterdon Central High School,
Moorestown finished 2016 with
the 23rd toughest schedule in the
state, according to laxpower.com.
After winning the sectional,
Moorestown fell just short of a
state championship on June 1
when it played North Jersey
Group III champion West Morris
Central High School. Moorestown
led the game, 5-2, at halftime, but

With four seconds left, West Morris Ryan Antonelle scored the
game-winning
goal,

Moorestowns season.
We didnt control the ball at

The turnovers ended up hurting
us.
The last-second loss deprived
Moorestown of its first state

but Wallenhurst said it doesnt diminish the season the Quakers
had.
It was a really fun group, he

Fundraiser stemmed from Make A Difference project held in class

the school to do and something
different that also will help people
with cancer, Emily said.
Emilys fundraiser started
with the Make A Difference project from her class with teacher
Carrie Schaffer. According to
Schaffer, the MAD project stems
from a unit called Stolen Childhoods" where students read about
and evaluate the problem of child
labor. One story was about a
young man named Iqbal Masih
who escaped labor and began
traveling the world teaching others about the injustices of child
labor. However, at the age of 12,
Iqbal was murdered in 1995 by the
carpet factory owners who enslaved him for many years. When
Iqbal died, a 12-year-old in Canada, Craig Kielburger, heard about
his story and started the organization Free The Children to con-

tinue Iqbal's fight. Today, Free

The Children is the leading organization of kids making a difference in the world.
After the unit, students were
challenged to do something about
a cause they are passionate about.
The goal is to teach them that,
just like Iqbal Masih and Craig
Kielburger, they can be the
change they want to see in the
world even though they are only
in seventh grade, Schaffer said.
Students completed various
projects related to their causes,
from writing letters to the president about prison reform to donating school supplies to the Salvation Army Kroc Center in Camden. Emily chose to help in the
fight against breast cancer. She
has a close family friend who had
breast cancer about two years
ago, so she is passionate about
helping to find a cure.
She was inspired by news stories about taping people to a wall
to help raise money for charity,
and thought that would be a great

and fun way to do her project.
I want people to see that helping people can be fun. It doesnt
have to be a task or a chore. It can
be fun and easy, Emily said.

According to Emily, it took her

about a month to get everything
together. She created posters,
emails and made announcements
about the event, as well as including some facts about breast cancer. She also got duct tape and
scissors in preparation for the
fundraiser. Schaffer helped Emily,
but just as a facilitator.
To get permission to hold the
fundraiser at the school, as well
as get willing participants for the
duct taping, Emily went to Keith
and Kelly to ask permission and
was given the go ahead.
Keith said he thought he would
be standing on the ground and
taped to the wall. However, when
he came to the cafeteria, he saw
he would be standing on a chair
to be taken away, to see if he
would stick to the wall.
Once I heard I would be standing on a chair, I was a little nervous, Keith said.
Students and staff donated
money to tape Keith. The pieces
were sold as $1 for the arms, $1.50
for the legs and $2 for the shoul-

ders. From shoulders to legs,

Keith was taped, and by the end of
the seventh-grade lunch period,
he was covered in pink and purple duct tape. Keith said while he
was being taped, he felt like it was
creating a fun connection with
students and staff.
When it came time to test to see
if Keith would stick, the chair
was removed with a little bit of
struggle, but he stuck. It lasted for
about 10 seconds, as the tape
started to come off and he stood
lightly on the ground.
The fall wasnt as bad as I had
expected, Keith said.
Kelly was taped to the wall for
the eighth-grade lunch period.
For all of the MAD projects,
students were able to donate $633
to their various organizations, according to Schaffer. Keith said
WAMS raised more than $5,000
this year for different charities.
This just epitomizes the giving spirit we have here. It is great
to see and hopefully (the students) can take that home and
continue to do it, Keith said.
