7E Lesson Plan

Grade level: Elementary- K-2

Big Idea: Recycled Landscape
Lesson Objectives:
Students will be introduced how things we do effects the environment. Students will be introduced to
El Anatsui who uses discarded bottle caps to create artwork. Students will learn to create their own
creative artwork with discarded materials. They will understand the processes of traditional recycling
and artistic recycling.
Art TEKS:
117.8. Art, Grade 2.
(a) Introduction.
(1) Four basic strands--perception, creative expression/performance, historical
and cultural
heritage, and critical evaluation--provide broad, unifying structures for organizing the knowledge and
skills students are expected to acquire. Students rely on their perceptions of the environment,
developed through increasing visual awareness and sensitivity to surroundings, memory,
imagination, and life experiences, as a source for creating artworks. They express their thoughts and
ideas creatively, while challenging their imagination, fostering reflective thinking, and developing
disciplined effort and problem-solving skills.
(b) Knowledge and skills.
(1) Perception. The student develops and organizes ideas from the environment. The student is
expected to:
(A) identify similarities, differences, and variations among subjects, using the senses; and
(2) Creative expression/performance. The student expresses ideas through original artworks, using a
variety of media with appropriate skill. The student is expected to:
(C) increase manipulative skills, using a variety of materials to produce drawings, paintings, prints,
and constructions.
(4) Response/evaluation. The student makes informed judgments about personal artworks and the
works of others. The student is expected to:
(A) express ideas about personal artworks; and
(B) identify simple ideas about original artworks, portfolios, and exhibitions by peers and others.
Interdisciplinary Connections:
Science, social studies
Teacher Materials: Power point introducing environmental issues and El Anatsui, teacher made
example of an artwork to show
Student Material: Paper, pencil, crayon, recycled lightweight cardboard materials, glue, and scissors
Elicit:
Teacher will uncover prior understanding about the topic by asking few questions about the
environment. Ask if they saw a good example of keeping the environment good or bad. They will be
writing down notes of how we can help clean the environment.
Engage:
The teacher will capture the students interest by introducing an artist El Anatsui who makes art with
discarded bottle tops and cans:
What materials is he using to create his piece of art?
What does his artwork remind you of?
How do you think this artwork is made?
Explore:
They will create a drawing of a clean environment with big shapes and little details. After they
created a drawing, they will get cut up pieces of recycled cardboard boxes. They will pick and choose

which pieces they will use based on color and glue them down on top of their drawing. The rest of the
space with details will be filled up with crayon.
The essential questions related to the big idea that the teacher will use
Why is environment so important to keep clean?
How do we create artwork with discarded materials?
Explain:

Continue the discussion after they have finished their project. They will lay all their
artwork on their tables and will have gallery walk.

What materials did we use to make this project?

What process did we take to make this project?

What kind of manipulation on the material did we use to make this project?
Elaborate:
Students will develop a more sophisticated understanding of the concept through a more thorough
criticism. Students will discuss how they will take this information about different ways to recycle and
use it in the future.
Evaluate:
Students will demonstrate that they have achieved the following lesson objective:
-participation during the whole project
-enthusiasm towards the project
-notes on recycling and the artist
-understanding the concept of making art with discarded materials
-participation during the critique of students work
Students will be assessed in different ways during the project: Participation level during the
presentation and critique, brief individual discussion about their work in progress, and assessment on
the final project
Extend:
Students will be able to take this lesson to their home. They will start to see how they can use
recycled materials to make an art at home.
Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs:
Attention Deficit students: Keep their interest by keep asking questions about the environment and
about their work, and assist them.
