Overview

This document describes antenna weights.

An antenna weight is also known as a broadcast beam weight. It is used to quantify specific
excitation signals transported to each antenna port so that an expected coverage pattern can be
formed.
Antenna weights only apply to 8T8R smart antennas. This chapter provides the definition of
antenna weights and describes the benefits offered by antenna weights.

Antenna Weight Management Feature Parameter
Description

2 Overview

2.1 Introduction
An antenna weight is used to quantify specific excitation signals transported to each antenna
port so that an expected coverage pattern can be formed.
The antenna weight is represented by amplitude or phase.
l

The amplitude is expressed by normalized voltage Ui, current Ii, or power. The square of
the amplitude represented by normalized voltage or current equals the amplitude
represented by normalized power.

The phase is expressed as an angle. The antenna weight format must meet the
requirements of the operation and maintenance center (OMC). If the format does not
meet the requirements, the format must be converted into the required format before
being imported into the OMCs of certain manufacturers.

If an 8T8R smart antenna is used, amplitudes and phases for eight channels must be
configured on the eNodeB side. That is, eight antenna weight groups must be configured,
which are used to form beam patterns that meet the broadcast and control channel coverage
requirements.

2.2 Benefits
Each antenna port is configured with specific antenna weights to achieve optimal antenna
coverage and therefore improve user experience.

3 Principles of Antenna Weights

Principles of Antenna Weights

Antennas are classified into omnidirectional and directional antennas according to the
horizontal direction pattern and classified into single-polarized and dual-polarized antennas
according to polarization characteristics. In most cases, omnidirectional antennas are singlepolarized antennas while directional antennas can be either single-polarized or dual-polarized
antennas.
An omnidirectional antenna radiates the same radio wave power in all directions on the
horizontal plane and radiates different radio wave power in different directions on the vertical
plane. A directional antenna radiates different radio wave power in any directions on the
horizontal and vertical planes.
Most single-polarized antennas are vertical polarization antennas, with antenna elements
vertically polarized, as shown in Figure 3-1. However, most dual-polarized antennas are +45
or -45 polarization antennas, with antenna elements +45 or -45 polarized, as shown in
Figure 3-2.
Figure 3-1 Single-polarized antenna

Figure 3-2 Dual-polarized antenna

The broadcast beam weights for single-polarized antennas are symmetrically distributed. For
example, the broadcast beam weights are identical or similar between ports 1 and 8, ports 2

Provided by antenna manufacturers, antenna weights are used to change the broadcast
beamwidth (30, 65, or 90) to meet various cell coverage requirements.
l

Antenna weights vary with antenna manufacturers and antenna types. Therefore, antenna
weights provided by one manufacturer cannot apply to antennas of the other
manufacturer, and antenna weights of one type of antenna cannot apply to antennas of
the other type. Otherwise, cell coverage is negatively affected.
NOTE

The element pattern in an array varies with antennas from different manufacturers due to different
internal mechanisms. In broadcast beams, all element patterns are superimposed in a vector manner after
they are weighted. Due to the different element patterns, broadcast beam weights are different for each
antenna manufacturer.

Broadcast beams with different widths are generated if different broadcast beam weights
are applied to an antenna. A broadcast beam can then be dynamically adjusted using
software without replacing the hardware. By applying these weight groups on a
broadcast beam, an antenna transmits different beams, probably in different patterns. All
weight groups may be correct, but only one group is optimal.

Table 3-3 lists the weights of a broadcast beam with the beamwidth of 65for dual-polarized
antennas. Figure 3-3 shows the pattern for the broadcast beam.

6 Engineering Guidelines for Antenna Weights

6.1 When to Use Antenna Weight Management

Antenna weights apply to all 8T8R smart antennas, including those with built-in RAE chips.
With the antenna weight parameters provided by manufacturers, the broadcast beamwidth can
be changed to meet the cell coverage requirements. The configuration of antenna weights is
planned by operators.
NOTE

Do not set amplitude of all antenna weights to 0. Otherwise, activation of a deactivated cell will fail.
Setting amplitude of an antenna weight to 0 affects the cell coverage performance.

A broadcast beam with a horizontal beamwidth of 65 can optimize cell coverage, and
therefore the broadcast beamwidth is adjusted to 65. Huawei eNodeBs support the antennas
whose broadcast beamwidth can be adjusted to 65 by using antenna weights and the antennas
with a fixed beamwidth of 65.
l

If an antenna with a beamwidth of a single array element to be 65 is used, the antenna

weights have been configured by default before delivery, and on-site configuration of
antenna weights is unnecessary.

If an antenna with a beamwidth of a single array element to be 90 is used, the antenna

weights must be configured on-site to adjust the broadcast beamwidth to 65.

6.2 Required Information

Before configuring antenna weights, collect the antenna information including the antenna
manufacturer, frequency band, downtilt, beamwidth of the antenna element, broadcast
beamwidth, and antenna weight.

6.4 Deployment
6.4.1 Requirements
Operating Environment
If the antenna weight file provided by the antenna manufacturer is used, FTP software must
be installed on the PC running the U2000 client or the Web LMT.
Cells with this feature enabled must be 8T8R cells. Configuration requirements of this feature
are as follows:
l

For BBU3900 or BBU3910, the BBP.WM parameter must be set to TDD_8T8R for
LBBPs but does not need to be specified for UBBPd boards.

For BBU3910A, the BBP.WM parameter does not need to be specified for UMDU
boards.
