A Word from Servant of God Isaac Hecker,

Founder of the Paulist Fathers
New religious communities, thus embracing an apostolic life, devoted to
universal aims, and to the primary principles of both the natural and the
supernatural order, and appreciating every truth in its place, it will be impossible
for them to be absorbed in special devotions. For Catholicity embraces all ages,
extends everywhere, and includes all truth. Nor will they confine their action to
any one locality. [On the Mission of New Religious Communities, 1876]
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill, and you
believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul Robichaud, CSP,
at 202-269-2519 and tell him your story

CAN YOU GIVE SOMEONE A RIDE?

One of our parishioners had back surgery recently and is unable to drive. She
would like to attend the Farewell Mass with Archbishop Sample on Sat. June 25.
She lives about 9 blocks south of Holgate at 86th. If you can help, please call
the office this coming week so we can connect you.

Pastoral Corner
Who Do We Say that We are?
Most Paulists would agree that two words which aptly describe the nature of the Community, and the work of most
Paulists are: missionary and pastoral.
To be missionary includes being evangelizers, reconcilers and people genuinely open to people of other
denominations, religions and people of no particular faith or religion.
The words of Pope Paul VI in his 1976 Apostolic Exhortation, On Evangelization in the Modern World, reminding us that
"the Church Exists in Order to Evangelize" were a follow-up on a major theme of the Vatican Council II document
on "The Church in the Modern World", and were reaffirmed in the US Bishop's 1993 document on evangelization, "Go
and Make Disciples", and demand of Catholics an active participation in the world in which they live.
To be pastoral means to be more concerned with people, and with people on faith journeys, with seekers and
searchers rather than with institutions and rules. As Pope Frances puts it: pastoral and pastoral oriented people must
smell like the sheep.
We Paulists believe we have been doing this since our founding in 1858 by Servant of God Isaac Hecker, CSP, and at
St Philip Neri Parish since its founding by the Paulists in 1912.
In the Gospel today, Jesus asks the apostles the Question, "Who do people say that I am? Jesus of course knew who
he was. But he needed to get the apostles and disciples thinking and also he needed to teach them that their own and
others' perceptions of who he was needed to change.
As the Paulists prepare with deep regret to leave our 104 years plus of ministry at St. Philip Neri, it is appropriate for
ourselves and others to ask similar questions about our ministry here.
And if we describe our ministry as having been both missionary and pastoral, the questions must also be asked --- How
well have we done? Do others say that both the Paulists and the parishioners of St Philip Neri are both missionary
and pastoral?
On behalf of Fr. Bill, Fr. Michael, and myself, thank you all for helping challenge us and helping us grow as missionaries
and pastors. We pray that each of you will continue in our and the Paulists' absence to be a parish of missionaries
and pastors to people in the community, the neighborhood and the Church in Western Oregon.

Fr. Charlie
