MAJOR ACADEMIC PROJECTS

1. Design consideration for solid blasting
Blast design for underground mining: studied and observed different types of blast pattern practiced
in u/g Coal mines
Optimized the blast pattern based on blast performance taking powder factor as one of the
performance indicator
Developed a blast design calculator to optimize the blast pattern to be used taking powder factor as
one of the performance indicator. This calculator will provide all the design parameters, production
per round and powder factor
2. Impact of confinement on the performance of commercial explosives
Study of different systems of measuring VOD under confined and unconfined conditions.
Comparison of measured VOD under confined and unconfined conditions.
Comparison of detonation pressure under confined and unconfined conditions.
Purposed a confined VOD based technical guidelines for explosives selection for blasting
Proposed a recommendation for BIS stipulation laid down on IS6609 to change the norm of
considering unconfined VoD by confined VoD for explosives selection criterion
3. Effect of Detonator Timing and its Scattering on Blast Vibration
To determine the scattering in detonators (Electrical and non-electrical)
To investigate the impact of scattering on blast induced vibrations.
To plan and design a safe blast considering the DGMS stipulation on peak particle velocity
4. Improvement of productivity of degree III mines in compliance with DGMS stipulations
Studied the existing pattern of production of degree III coal mines.
Innovation of new blasting sequences for better ease of burden relieve.
Designing a new P5 explosives with low critical diameter and increased gap sensitivity.
Increasing the pull and production per blast incorporating the two above concepts for solid blasting.
5. Rock Fragmentation analysis (Ph. D Research Work-On going)
Fragmentation principle
Factors affecting the fragment size
Quantifying fragmentation
Calculation of fragmentation
Evaluation of fragmentation
VOCATIONAL TRAININGS
Observed blasting and production cycle in Kusunda Colliery (OCP), BCCL
Observed drilling, blasting and production operations at Jaduguda mine, UCIL
FIELD TRIPS
Sonepur Bazari Project (ECL), CIL: Observed continuous VoD monitoring of SME explosives.
Bhowra Mine (BCCL), CIL: Observed the continuous VOD monitoring of cartridge explosives
(permitted/Non permitted).
Godhur colliery (BCCL), CIL: Observed the blasting and production operations.

Other mines visited: Jitpur colliery, Jaduguda mine, Narwapahar mineetc.
