Personal Statement
Career Goals
As a non-traditionally aged student returning to college, I am aware that there two ways that one can begin a career in
this industry as a 44-year old woman. One is based on years of experience and the other is based on an innate
understanding of the industry. While I may not have more than five-years of experience in Health Care
Management, my previous experience in billings and collections has given me an insight that is regularly relevant in the
day-to-day applications of this field.
My career goals of moving into training and eventually, compliance is based on my own experience in understanding the
way in which key foundations in billing can affect the overall quality of a patients healthcare. Far too often I have seen
how careless mistakes in billing cost a provider money in back-tracking and billing resolution. While this is an
important consideration, the one who pays the ultimate price in backlogged paperwork is the patient. Authorizations
for future services, accurate records with which to build a plan of care and affordability of services are of genuine
concern to the patient. As billing professionals, we are not only responsible for reconciliation of payments owed, we are
also part of the cog that turns the gear in quality patient care management.

Past Achievements
Over the years I have become the go-to person in my job that people turn to when they are confused or unsure of what
went wrong in coding or why an insurance company denied a claim or a request for authorization. Accomplishments in
my current position include:

Collaborated with clinicians and intake department to troubleshooting and resolve billing, claims and compliance
issues resulting from ICD-10 implementation by identifying underlying reason for rejected claims and by obtaining
detailed information from payers regarding specific behavioral health (Multi-Axial) diagnosis.
Implemented process to identify potentially erroneous ICD-10's on unbilled claims and send back for review.
Reduced the amount of lost revenue due to filing past timely limits from 32% to less than 1% by improving the
process for identifying and billing claims in need of coordination of benefits documentation.
Recovered 87% of retractions/take-backs by identifying & resolving PA Autism Mandate Compliance issues.
Named Employee-of-the-month in July of 2013 and October of 2014.

These experiences have encouraged me seek out ways in which I utilize my skills to not only advance in the industry but
to also be part of the quality of services that patients receive. My ultimate goal is to become an in-house trainer and to
examine ways that my particular insight and experience can contribute to the overall improvement of patient care.

Future Goals
As a single mother of a daughter with ADHD, I have regularly had to put my career goals on hold for the well-being of my
child. I am proud to say that she is now attending college and intends to pursue a career in the field in Engineering. I
finally have the time to devote to my own career development. Over the long-term my vision is to move into a role where
I am developing processes and procedures for a providers day-today operations. A role of Compliance Officer would be
suited to my innate ability to identify, troubleshoot and understand problematic issues.
My education goals include earning an AAS at Community College of Baltimore County in Health Information and
Information Technology, which will prepare me for RHIT certification. Coppin State University and CCBC have an
articulation agreement, and my intention is to then earn a bachelors at CSU in HIM. This would qualify me to take the
RHIA certification exam. Ultimately, I plan to obtain a Masters in HIM. UMUC of Adelphi is certified by AHIMA for this
goal, and is a university well-known for being accessible to working professionals. Together with the on-the-job
experience Ive already gained and will continue to develop as I further my education, my goal is to complete this
journey within the next 10 years.
