Chapter 3 Services

ADSL Service
Overview

ADSL technology is an important member of the xDSL family. It

allows more downstream bandwidth from the central office to the
subscriber side than upstream. The upstream uses the frequency
band from 30 KHz to 138 KHz. The downstream uses the frequency band from 138 KHz to 1.104 MHz.
Asymmetry, combined with always-on access (eliminating the call
setup), makes ADSL ideal for Internet/Intranet surfing, VoD, and
remote LAN access.

Features

ADSL has the following features:

ADSL complies with ANSI T1.413 issue 2, ITU-T G.992.1, ITU-T

G.992.2, ITU-T G.996.1, ITU-T G.992.3, and ITU-T G.992.5
standards.

It supports the DMT modulation mode.

It supports the FDM mode.

It uses the asymmetric transmission mode. The upstream rate

can reach up to 1 Mbps and downstream rate can reach up to
8 Mbps.

It automatically adapts the rate (with the granularity of 32

Kbps) based on line conditions.

ADSL query and configuration parameters include upstream/downstream rate, noise tolerance, output power and
line attenuation.

It obtains bits quantity at each sub-carrier side.

It provides the online loading function for programmable apparatus and card software.

It supports remote maintenance and remote software upgrade

It supports line alarm maintenance and message report function

Each ADSL interface supports eight PVC connections.

ADSL2/2+ Service
Overview

Features

ADSL2/2+ is a new generation of ADSL broadband service access

technology. ADSL2/2+ is compatible with ADSL. In addition, it
supports higher rate and longer transmission distance.
ADSL2/2+ has the following features:

More operation modes

ADSL2/2+ technology supports three operation modes:

annex A
This mode uses ADSL over POTS, with POTS service on the
same pair of lines.

annex B

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

33

FSAP 9800 Technical Manual

This mode uses ADSL over ISDN, with ISDN service on the
same pair of lines.

annex C
This ADSL service works with TCM-ISDN interference.

Besides the three modes described above, ADSL2/2+ also supports three more modes:

annex I
It is compatible to complete digital mode of ADSL over
POTS (annex A) frequency spectrum. The available upstream band can be expanded from 3 KHz to 138 KHz if
there is no POTS service on line. It supports 31 sub-bands
at the maximum. The maximum upstream rate exceeds 1
Mbps.

annex J
It is compatible to the complete digital mode of ADSL over
ISDN (annex B) frequency spectrum. The available upstream band can be expanded from 3 KHz to 276 KHz
if there is no ISDN service on the line. It supports 64
sub-bands at the maximum. The utmost upstream rate
reaches to 2.3 Mbps.

annex M
It is ADSL over POTS with the expanded upstream bandwidth. The upstream rate reaches to 3 Mbps. For the downstream, the frequency is overlap and non-overlap similar to
annex B.

Higher rate
Compared with ADSL, ADSL2/2+ supports higher rate, wider
frequency, and more sub-bands (512 sub-bands). The maximum downstream rate can reach up to 24 Mbps. If ADSL2/2+
annex J is used, the upstream rate is increased to 2.3 Mbps.

Longer transmission distance

ADSL2/2+ supports longer transmission distance. For ADSL,
the longest transmission distance is less than 6 km. For
ADSL2/2+, the longest transmission distance is 6.5 km.

Lower power consumption

ADSL2/2+ provides power management function as follows:

34

Reduce the noise tolerance beyond requirements by decreasing transmission power consumption. Decrease useless power consumption on precondition of ensuring stable
operation.
Add the low consumption mode L2 mode. Decrease the
transmission power consumption in case that no subscriber
data is transmitted. Ensure the necessary power consumption for transmitting required management message and
synchronous signal. Resume the power consumption when
subscriber data transmits. The power consumption of FSAP
9800 is about 30% of that in usual operation when it is running in L2 mode.
The CO and CPE of ADSL2/2+ have the power cut back
function. The power attenuation ranges from 0 dB to 40 dB.

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

Chapter 3 Services

The transmission power consumption can be effectively cut

down when the transmission power is too large, ensuring
the normal receiving of data.

Stable running capability and frequency compatibility

ADSL2/2+ has more stable running capability and frequency
compatibilities as follows:

Receiver decides carrier sequence and pilot tone upon the

channel analysis. Its result can truly reflect the channel
situation and select the best tone as pilot which is useful to
stabilize the ADSL connection.
The receiver can test RFI distribution by RFI closing tone
channels or controls the transmit power of tone through
CO-MIB. It effectively avoids RFI and reduces the interference on ambient devices.
It has fine dynamic adaptability. The bit swapping and
line rate changes dynamically enhancing the adaptability
to changeable line parameters.
It needs less time to resume connection from faults.

Line diagnosis function

ADSL2/2+ supports test function at both ends. The following
parameter can be tested:

Line transmission feature

Background noise power spectrum

Signal-noise ratio of each sub-band

Noise tolerance and bearable bits of each sub-band

Attainable connection speed rate

Better interworking capability

Based on different functions, ADSL2/2+ classifies ADSL transceivers into TPS-TC (transmission protocol related convergence
sub-layer), PMS-TC (physical medium related convergence
sub-layer), PMD (physical medium related sub-layer), and
MPS-TC (management protocol related convergence sub-layer,
used for NM interface). Encapsulating each sub-layer and
defining the message among sub-layers helps implementing
networking of various devices from different factories.

VDSL2 Service
Overview

VDSL2, the second generation of VDSL, provides high-bandwidth

access, applying to the transmission with symmetric rate and
asymmetric rate.
VDSL2 uses the DMT technique. The usable frequency band is
added. It can provide 100 Mbps symmetric bandwidth.

Features

VDSL2 has the following features:

ITU-T VDSL2 standard (G.993.2) compliant

G.993.2 annex A, annex B 997/998, annex C

It supports RFI to eliminate the RF interference for the
medium-wave and shortwave broadcast signals and ham
radio signals.
It supports user-defined PSD.

SHDSL Service
Overview

SHDSL technology provides high-speed symmetric data service on

a single or two pairs of twisted-pairs.
SHDSL technology can transport data symmetrically at data rates
from 200 Kbps to 2312 Kbps on a single pair of twisted-pair cables.
For SHDSL with two pairs of twisted-pairs cable, the transmission
rate ranges from 400 Kbps to 4624 Kbps. SHDSL supports rate
adaptation based on line conditions.

Features

SHDSL has the following features:

It complies with ITU-T G.991.2 annex A and annex B

It uses the TC-PAM modulation mode.

It uses the symmetric transmission mode. The rate for a single

pair of twisted pairs ranges from 200 Kbps to 2312 Kbps. The
rate for two pairs of twisted pairs ranges from 400 Kbps to
4624 Kbps.

It automatically adapts the rate (with the granularity of 64

Kbps) based on line conditions.

It can query the port parameters include upstream/downstream rate, noise tolerance, output power and line attenuation.

It provides online loading function for programmable apparatus

and card software.

It supports emote maintenance and remote software upgrade.

It supports card information report, including line alarm information report and link status (up or down).

Compared with SHDLS, SHDSL.bis has the following features:

Port Location
Port location and identification is a capability of the service gateway and background system to obtain the physical location of subscribers. For example, BAS is used to get the port number of a
DSL subscriber for authentication, charging, and identification.

VBAS
VBAS protocol provides an applicable method for communication between BAS and IP DSLAM. VBAS protocol adds a communication process between BAS and IP DSLAM, which can get
the detailed subscriber information.
i.

The subscriber sends an identification request packet to the

BAS.

ii. The BAS sends the VBAS request packet to the DSLAM to
query the relationship between the MAC address of the subscriber host and the DSLAM physical port.
iii. After receiving the VBAS request packet, the DSLAM sends
the VBAS response packet to the BAS to return the relationship between the MAC address of the subscriber host
and the DSLAM physical port.
iv. The BAS authenticates the subscriber information locally or
remotely.

PPPoE+
PPPoE+ is an improved protocol based on PPPoE. It modifies
PPPoE protocol messages on the DSLAM.
In the discovery phase, PPPoE+ adds subscriber information to
the BAS. The BAS maintains the relationship between the subscriber physical location information and the subscriber session
ID. In the LCP authentication phase, the subscriber physical location information is sent with the user name and password to
the RADIUS server for authentication.

DHCP Option 82
In the DHCP process, the identification information on the subscriber port is added to the DHCP packet.
The DHCP server inserts Option 82 to the subscriber DHCP
messages. The DHCP implements the IP address distribution
policy and other policies by identifying Option 82. The response
message of the DHCP server also has Option 82. The DHCP
strips Option 82 before sending the message to the subscriber.

VLAN stacking
VLAN stacking allows a service provider to distinguish multiple
subscriber VLANs, even those with the same (subscriber-assigned) VLAN ID, within its network.
VLAN stacking is used for port location. VLAN stacking meets
the subscriber demands of VLAN expansion and dedicated line
batch service. If VLAN stacking is applied to extend VLAN number and identify subscribers, BAS is required. If it is used to
provide dedicated line batch service, it is required that the upper-level network is layer-2 working mode. The service is forwarded based on VLAN and MAC address.

FSAP 9800 Technical Manual

DHCP
FSAP 9800 uses the following DHCP services:

DHCP Snooping

DHCP snooping

DHCP source guard

FSAP 9800 can monitor the DHCP sessions on the subscriber port
and create a DHCP snooping database. The DHCP snooping database includes the following information:

Subscriber port and PVC

Subscriber IP address

Subscriber MAC address

Lease time of subscriber IP address

The DHCP snooping database can be created or deleted according

to the subscriber DHCP session. The database can be saved by
the NM command and restored after the system is restarted.
The records in the DHCP snooping database can be aged. If no
DHCP is released during the lease time of the record, FSAP 9800
automatically deletes the record from the database.
DHCP Source
Guard

DHCP source guard is a security function created based on the

DHCP snooping function.
DHCP source guard provides the following functions:

When no IP address is allocated to the subscriber, FSAP 9800

does not forward subscriber packets.

When the subscriber uses the IP address that is not allocated

by DHCP, FSAP 9800 does not forward subscriber packets.

User Port Loopback Detection

User port loopback detection is a means to ensure the security of
system networking.
FSAP 9800 uplink port can enable STP or other protocols to avoid
network storm caused by loops. When loops occur on the FSAP
9800 user port physically, the traffic from network is looped back
to the network. Consequently, the network storm occurs or the
uplink port is blocked. FSAP 9800 uses port loopback detection to
stop blocking of the uplink port.

ACL
ACL is used to limit the access of external devices to the local
device. The ACL principle is to classify input packets based on a
series of matching conditions and determines how to process the
packets (to forward or discard them).

FSAP 9800 online test system consists of four components:

Online test NMS

An independent online test interface is used for FSAP 9800
integrated management.

NetNumen NMS
An integrated NMS is used for FSAP 9800 management.

External line tester for test line function

FSAP 9800 NE
In the online test system, the FSAP 9800 NE can be grouped
into two types:

Work Flow

Root node: TCP is used for communications with NetNumen. TCP is responsible for receiving the line capture or
line release command from NetNumen, and forwarding the
command to non-root NEs. The root node and NetNumen
use the heart-beat frame mode to detect TCP links.
Non-root node: TCP is used for communications with root
node. No direct communication is made with NetNumen.
The line capture or line release command from NetNumen
is forwarded by the root node. The non-root node and root
node use the heart-beat frame mode to detect TCP links.

The FSAP 9800 online test system work flow is as follows:

1. The operator sends a line test command through the online
test NMS.
2. The online test NMS sends a line capture command to the FSAP
9800 root node through the NMS. The command parameters
include:

Message type

Test equipment number

Test unit number

Command ID

Destination NE IP address of message

NE slot ID

Port ID at NE slot

Test type (external line, internal line, protection, and bridging)

3. The FSAP 9800 root node checks if the line capture command
is for the local NE according to the destination NE IP address.
If the command is for the local NE, this NE conducts local line
capture according to the slot/port in the command and returns
the line capture result.
4. If the root node finds that the command is not for the local NE,
it forwards the command to a non-root node according to the
destination NE IP address.
After receiving the command, the non-root node conducts local
line capture according to the slot/port in the command and
sends the result to the root node. The root node then sends
the result to the NMS.

42

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

Chapter 3 Services

5. After receiving a line capture reply forwarded by the NMS, the

online test NMS sends a line test command to the external
line tester, collects test data, and displays the data to the subscriber.
6. After completing the subscriber line test, the online test NMS
sends a line release command to the root node NE through the
NMS.
7. The FSAP 9800 root node checks if the line capture command
is for the local NE according to the destination NE IP address.
If the command is for the local NE, this NE conducts local line
release according to the slot/port in the command and then
returns the line capture result.
8. If the root node finds that the command is not the local NE, it
forwards the command to the non-root node according to the
destination NE IP address.
9. After receiving the command, the non-root node conducts local
line release according to the slot/port in the command and then
sends the line capture result to the root node. The root node
then sends the result to the NMS.
10. After the online test NMS receives the line release reply forwarded by the NMS, the line test ends.

Note:
FSAP 9800 system uses six types of DSL subscriber cards: ATNG,
ASNV, ISNV, VSNKC, STNG, and SSNG. Among them, the ATNG
card (with a built-in splitter) supports the online test function. The
ASNV and ISNV cards implement the online test function with help
of external splitter cards. The VSNKC STNG and SSNG cards do
not support the online test function.

SELT/DELT
SELT/DELT is one of the ADSL/ADSL2+ technology features.
SELT is implemented to get line parameters and features with the
test means of the device at the office end when the modem is not
connected at the user end.
SELT is implemented to get the line information such as the line
length, line shortcut status, and line noise. The splitter and modem on the line affects the accuracy of the test result.
Remember to remove the relevant terminal devices on the line
before performing the test.
DELT is implemented to get line parameters and features with the
functions of the device at the office end and the user end. For
DELT, the system directly enters the test mode, skipping the data
mode. DELT is implemented to get the following information:

Background noise

Signal/noise ratio

43

FSAP 9800 Technical Manual

Signal attenuation of each sub-carrier channel

Loop attenuation

The information is helpful to decide whether the subscriber line is

suitable to carry the ADSL service. DELT is implemented to make
comparative correct evaluation on the usability of the current line
in case that the ADSL service fails to create a link between the
user modem and the office end.

ADSL Modem Remote Management

Basic PVC and
Extended PVC

Basic PVC
After system startup, FSAP 9800 creates basic PVC 0/16 (ADSL
port PVC 8) for ADSL modem management in SNMP proxy
mode.

Extended PVC
In Telnet proxy and HTTP proxy mode, FSAP 9800 creates extended PVC 1/39 (ADSL port PVC 7).

SNMP Proxy Mode

Figure 16 shows the ADSL modem remote management system in

SNMP proxy mode.

The system consists of three parts:

NetNumen NMS
Implements ADSL modem remote management through SNMP,
and provides man-machine interface.

FSAP 9800 NE
The FSAP 9800 SNMP agent works in SNMP proxy mode, and
forwards SNMP protocol packets between the NMS and ADSL
modem.

ADSL modem
ADSL modem is equivalent to a managed NE.

The SNMP proxy mode not only facilitates the NMS to access the
ADSL modem, but also automatically configures the ADSL modem.
The work flow in SNMP proxy mode is as follows:
1. After being restarted, the ADSL modem uses an SNMP trap
packet to report the ADSL modem information and configures
an ID for FSAP 9800.
2. FSAP 9800 analyzes the ADSL modem information and configuration ID.
3. FSAP 9800 also uses an SNMP trap packet to reply to the packets reported by the subscriber end. This facilitates the CPE to
determine the available management channel and whether re-

configuration is necessary. If reconfiguration is necessary, go

to Step 4; otherwise, it is in the normal state.
4. FSAP 9800 determines whether to deliver ADSL modem configuration information according to related policy. If it determines
to deliver the configuration information, FSAP 9800 sends the
configuration information to the ADSL CPE through SNMP, and
conducts synchronization of configuration ID.
HTTP Proxy Mode

FIGURE 17 ADSL MODEM REMOTE MANAGEMENT IN HTTP PROXY MODE

ADSL modem remote management in HTTP proxy mode uses an

HTTP page redirection principle, and uses an HTTP proxy port to
identify the subscriber slot/port, to implement remote management of the ADSL modem in HTTP proxy mode.
The system consists of three parts:

HTTP Client
It can be integrated in the NetNumen NMS or can be an independent computer.

FSAP 9800 NE in HTTP proxy mode

ADSL modem, serving as an HTTP protocol server

The work flow in HTTP proxy mode is as follows:

1. The subscriber enters http://IP address of the host/modem.htm?slot=card slot number&port=port number.
2. HTTP client sets up a TCP link with Port 80 of FSAP 9800 (TCP
port ID of the standard HTTP server).
3. FSAP 9800 processes the login requests of a subscriber. If
the login succeeds, FSAP 9800 allocates an HTTP proxy port to
the subscriber according to the slot/port number in the HTTP
packet, and also sends an HTTP redirection packet of the FSAP
9800 proxy port to the HTTP client.
4. The HTTP client originates a new HTTP request according to the
HTTP redirection packet and new IP address of the proxy port.
5. FSAP 9800 calculates the slot number and port number of the
ADSL modem according to the proxy port, and sets up an ADSL
modem TCP link (port 80). After the link is established, the
HTTP client automatically enters the HTTP page of the ADSL
modem.
6. When the subscriber requests the ADSL modem page, FSAP
9800 uses the HTTP proxy mode to forward HTTP packets between the HTTP client and ADSL modem.
7. If the HTTP packets are not received in a specific time period,

link are disconnected automatically. Then the HTTP Client exits

the HTTP page of the ADSL MODEM.

Note:
FSAP 9800 uses the HTTP proxy mode and supports management

ADSL modem, serving as the Telnet server

The work flow in Telnet proxy mode is as follows:

1. The subscriber enters the modem slot/port command on the
embedded NM interface of FSAP 9800. FSAP 9800 creates a
Telnet link according to the slot/port, and logs in to the ADSL
modem as the client.
2. After the Telnet link is established, the subscriber enters the
Telnet interface of the ADSL modem at the slot/port through
the embedded NM interface of FSAP 9800. FSAP 9800 forwards
the data through the Telnet link created for the ADSL modem.
3. When the subscriber exits the Telnet interface of the ADSL modem, FSAP 9800 automatically releases the Telnet link and the
subscriber returns to the embedded NM interface of FSAP 9800.

Note:
FSAP 9800 uses the Telnet proxy mode and supports management
over five ADSL modems.

Modem Management Security

When a subscriber sends too much data on their PVC, the system
disables the PVC and the subscriber is unable to send data. This is
for security purposes as the subscriber can try to block the system
by DoS attacks.

ATM Ping
The loopback cell is a kind of ATM OAM cell. Among the nodes
of the ATM link, if a loopback cell is detected, the system determines whether to return the cell according to the segment or end
properties. ATM ping is a method that uses the OAM cells to check
whether the physical links work normally.
In the FSAP 9800 system, the process of implementing ATM ping
by a DSL port is as follows:
1. FSAP 9800 delivers an ATM loopback cell to the port.
2. After receiving the cell, the modem returns it to FSAP 9800.
3. FSAP 9800 checks whether the loopback is successful according to the cell sending and receiving conditions, and thus
checks whether the DSL line works normally.

Environment Monitoring
Environment monitoring includes environment parameter monitoring and power monitoring. Environment parameter monitoring
aims to monitor the temperature, humidity, flood, smog, entrance
guard, and distribution frame. Power monitoring aims to monitor
the power supply system.
Environment

System

For hardware, the environment monitoring system consists of an

EPM monitoring plug-in box and EPS card. For software, the FSAP
9800 integrated NMS displays and configures various environment
data variables.

Functions

The environment monitoring module performs the following functions:

Manages and controls the operation and configuration of the

monitoring card.

Checks the parameters reported by the power supply, fan, and

VLAN Service
VLAN technology implements virtual work group by dividing the
devices in a local network logically rather than physically.
FSAP 9800 supports the following VLAN types:

Common VLAN

Common VLAN

PVLAN

MVLAN

SVLAN

VLAN technology allows the network administrator to divide

a physical LAN into different broadcast domains. Each VLAN
contains a group of computer work stations which have the
same requirements. The computer work stations share the same
properties with the physical LAN.
As the devices are divided logically rather than physically, work
stations in the same VLAN are not located in the same physical
space, that is, those work stations may not belong to the same
physical LAN network segment. The broadcast and unicast traffic
inside one VLAN is not forwarded to other VLANs.
Common VLAN has the following advantages:

Traffic control

Simplified network management

Enhanced network security

FSAP 9800 supports the following VLAN features:

Port-based VLAN
In the port-based VLAN, one port or one group of ports are
specified as one VLAN. Ports of different VLANs cannot directly
communicates with each other at layer-2. The communication
is implemented through the routers in the VLAN. One port can
only be specified to one VLAN.

IEEE 802.1Q-based VLAN

The IEEE 802.1Q standard specifies a tag operation, which is
to add a four-byte tag field next to the destination address and
source address of an Ethernet frame. The tag field contains the
identifier of the VLAN, called as VLAN ID.
The IEEE 802.1Q-based VLAN mode distinguishes the VLAN
upon the VLAN ID in the VLAN tag of an Ethernet frame. Usually, it is used in multiple VLANs across multiple devices. The
connection between devices is called VLAN trunking. FSAP
9800 supports identifying the tagged packets and tagging the
untagged packets.

VLAN based on port and 802.1Q

This hybrid policy combines the features of port-based VLAN
and IEEE 802.1Q-based VLAN. Port-based VLAN is used for terminal user port and IEEE 802.1Q-based VLAN is used for the
connection between devices.

48

VLAN trunking

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

Chapter 3 Services

VLAN trunking is used for VLAN connection between different

devices. In this mode, one port or one group of ports bear
multiple VLANs. Multiple VLANs of various devices can interconnect to the same VLAN at the opposite through one port or
one group of ports.
The principle is to make different 802.1Q tags on one port or
one group of ports to identify various VLAN packets, implementing VLAN interconnection in the global network.
PVLAN

PVLAN has two kinds of ports:

PVLAN port
PVLAN ports cannot interwork with each other but can interwork with other common ports in the PVLAN. They are used as
subscriber ports.

Common port
Common ports can interwork with all the ports in the PVLAN.
They are used as uplink ports.

In the basic MAC+VLAN forwarding mode, one VLAN forms one

broadcast domain. The broadcast packets of one VLAN or unknown
unicast packets are broadcast to all ports of this VLAN. Generally,
the division of VLAN is related to the assignment of IP addresses.
To make efficient use of IP addresses, it is required to divide largescale VLANs.
With the consideration of the subscriber access data flow and data
security, it is required to have as few as users in a broadcast domain, even one broadcast domain for one user, to completely isolate users.
To implement the two objectives, one VLAN requires two roles: the
network-side interface and the user-side interface. The networkside interface belongs to the same broadcast domain with all users.
The user-side interface belongs to the same broadcast domain with
the network-side interface, isolated with other ports.
FSAP 9800 uses PVLAN to implement the application described
above.
MVLAN

MVLAN has two meanings:

MVLAN corresponds to the basic VLAN which is used for multicast service.

MVLAN is a logical entity managed by the DSLAM multicast.

FSAP 9800 supports multiple MVLANs. An MVLAN contains three

management parameters:

Management group set

The management group set is a list of IP addresses that can
be managed by an MVLAN. If the requested multicast address
is not in the management group set, the user cannot obtain
the relevant services provided by the multicast address. The
management group sets of different MVLANs cannot be overlapped.

Multicast source port

A multicast source port is used for uplink multicast router or for
multicast service cascade in an MVLAN. Essentially, the multicast source port is a special port performing the above func-

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

49

FSAP 9800 Technical Manual

tions in the basic VLAN. One MVLAN can have multiple multicast source ports and one source port can belong to multiple
MVLANs.

Multicast receiver port

A multicast receiver port authorizes a user port with the qualification of asking for multicast service. If the user port is not
the receiver port of one MVLAN, all the multicast requests from
the port are refused. In addition, the receiver port can be used
for cascade. Therefore, the MVLAN enables the DSLAM to support two services:

SVLAN

The multicast service can be directly forwarded to the

DSLAM.
The DSLAM dynamically requests multicast service from the
uplink multicast device.

SVLAN has two application modes:

VLAN stacking
VLAN stacking meets the user demands of VLAN expansion and
dedicated line batch service. The dedicated line batch service
indicates that multiple ISPs probably exit in a layer-2 switching
MAN. The subscriber uses the outer-layer VLAN of VLAN stacking to identify the ISP which the subscriber belongs to.
The system assigns an inner-layer tag (Customer VLAN) to the
port that can implement the stacking service to identify the
subscriber. Then, it tags the outer-layer VLAN (SP VLAN) to the
port. On the network, the service is forwarded based on the
outer-layer VLAN, which is removed when the service reaches
to the BAS device. At the BAS device, the system identifies
the subscriber based on the inner-layer tag. VLAN stacking is
used to locate the port.

Q-in-Q VLAN
Q-in-Q VLAN implements the directly transparent transmission
of the VLAN service to the peer end. The principle of the Q-in-Q
VLAN is that FSAP 9800 receives the VLAN tagged packet from
the lower-layer network and assigns VLAN ID of the public network to the packet, and then forwards it to the upper-layer
network. The packet is transmitted through the backbone network of the MAN. When the packet reaches to the other side of
the backbone network, the VLAN tag of the public network is
removed and the packet is recovered to the subscriber packet.
Then, the packet is forwarded to the user-side device.
The packet transmitted in the backbone network has two
802.1q tags: the public network tag and the private network
tag. In this way, the private VLAN is transparently forwarded
to the peer end directly. The VLAN ID resource of the public
network is greatly saved.

Multicast Service
Overview

50

Multicast refers to point-to-multipoint communication in the network. The multicast technology implements the point-to-multipoint data transmission in the network effectively. The key point

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

Chapter 3 Services

of the multicast technology is to copy the packet at the nearest

place to the receiver.
Functions

Multicast provides the following functions:

Reduce the server load. The server does not need to process
the request of each user.

Save the network bandwidth. Reduce the network equipment

requirements.

The user scale is flexible. Enlarging the user scale does not
bring extra load on the network bandwidth.

Principle

The source host sends data whose destination address is the address of the multicast group. All receivers in the multicast group
can receive the same data copy. Other hosts in the network cannot
receive the data except the host (destination host) in the multicast
group. The multicast group is identified with Type D IP address
(224.0.0.0 239.255.255.255).

Multicast Modes

To adapt to various environments, FSAP 9800 supports the following multicast modes:

IGMP snooping
In IGMP snooping mode, the system is not responsible for managing the status of multicast members. It only passively implements IGMP message snooping and forwarding. It has a little
influence on the system load. However, it greatly increases
protocol processing load of the uplink equipment.

IGMP proxy
In IGMP proxy mode, the system manages the status of multicast members actively, efficiently reducing the protocol load
of the uplink device.

IGMP router
The IGMP router mode is a simplified proxy mode. In case the
multicast service is sent to the uplink port, the system does
not require uplink port for multicast service dynamically.

Controlled multicast
The controlled multicast refers to control multicast service
packets. It implements user management and service management of multicast services, including the following:

Multicast authorization and accounting

Multicast monitoring and analysis

Multicast QoS

Multicast encryption

Multicast address assignment

FSAP 9800 supports controlled multicast technology on the basis of complete compliance with the standard multicast protocol.
When a user joins one multicast group, FSAP 9800 authorizes
the user and decides whether to take the user into the multicast
group depending on the authorization result. This is called
multicast authorization.

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

51

FSAP 9800 Technical Manual

FSAP 9800 controlled multicast processes the flow following

IGMP proxy standards. It decides whether to add a user port
to one multicast group according to the information such as
the user port, multicast group address, user MAC address, and
user IP address, to fulfill the objective of multicast authorization.

Multicast package
Multicast package is channel package. Each package is a group
of channel programs. Each program in the package is assigned
with the right of Permit or Preview. Any channel can be configured in a package and can be assigned with rights independently.
The package is applied on a specific port, affecting the multicast channel access right of the user port. One user port can
use multiple packages. If the rights of the same channel in different packages are different, the rights are combined based
on the principal of using the highest right of all rights. The
right level follows the sequence of Permit - Preview - Reject.
Permit has the highest right.

CAC
CAC is used to control the range of multicast channels accessed
by a subscriber. The subscriber has the right to watch purchased multicast channels, preview some channels, and refuse
to access other channels.
In addition, the preview attributes of channels involve the following:

Maximum preview times during the resetting interval

Maximum time period of each preview

Interval between two preview times

Preview
The preview channel stands for a special right in subscribers
channel access, allowing subscribers to implement manageable view without subscribing some programs. The preview
module provides preview management based on ports. It establishes and maintains the preview program table of each port
subscriber.

CDR
CDR saves and reports the multicast records. The multicast
records are generated by the CAC and preview modules. When
a multicast record needs to be generated, the CAC and preview
modules invoke the interface provided by the CDR to process
the record.
The CDR module saves the received records in the DSLAM
memory temporarily. After generating a record block, the CDR
module reports it to the service management system. After
receiving the response from the service management system,
the CDR module deletes the local records.

Chapter 3 Services

QoS
QoS provides network service functions with different service qualities to meet various demands.
QoS has the following features:

Traffic
Classification

Traffic classification

Traffic policing

Port rate limit

Queue scheduling

Traffic mirroring

Traffic classification refers to classify packets and transmit them to

different system devices for processing. Traffic identification with
different priority features is based on the ToS field in IP packet
head.
For example, classify packets based on information on the data
link layer, network layer, and transmission layer. This information
includes MAC address, IP protocol type, source (host, network segment) address, destination (host, network segment) address, and
port number of the application program.

Traffic Policing

Traffic policing is used to monitor service flow according to classification rule at the packets receiving port. It enables the service
flow to adapt to the allocated network resource, such as bandwidth. Traffic policing is used for rate restriction on packets receiving port, monitoring traffic flowing to one network. If packet
rate is too fast, traffic policing can discard the packet or reset the
packet priority.

Port Rate Limit

Port rate limit is used to monitor and restrict the bandwidth occupied by the service traffic at the port that sends packets. This
enables the service traffic to adapt to the network resource. Port
rate limit sets a rate threshold at the port that sends packets. If
the traffic exceeds this rate, the packets are discarded. In this
way, sending rate is limited.

Queue Scheduling

Queue scheduling solves the problem that multiple packets compete for the network resource when packets are forwarded. Queue
scheduling modes include the following:

SP

WRR

SP+WRR

These algorithms solve packet forwarding problems in each output

queue of device port according to their own principles. FSAP 9800
supports these three queue scheduling modes.
Traffic Mirroring

Traffic mirroring is used to monitor service flows according to the

traffic classification rule. This function copies data packets according to the traffic classification rule to monitor port, facilitate
network detection, and locate the faults.

FSAP 9800 supports the Ethernet cascading networking. DSLAM

equipments of multiple levels can be concatenated through the
Ethernet uplink ports, which can effectively extend the network
coverage distance and meet the requirements of large subscriber
capacity. FSAP 9800 equipments provide FE, GE and 10GE interfaces to concatenate other DSLAM equipments.
There are two types of cascading methods:
1. Use the interface daughter card of the control and switch card
to provide the Ethernet uplink port;
2. Use the Ethernet interface card to provide the Ethernet uplink
port.
FSAP 9800 Ethernet cascading networking scheme is as Figure 20
shows. In this example, FSAP 9800 is concatenated to FSAP 9803
through the interface daughter card of the control and switch card.

PON Access Networking

FSAP 9800 supports the following PON access networking modes:

Star Networking

Star networking

Tree networking

Bus networking

When the OLT is connected to the ONU in point-to-point mode, and

each ONU is connected to the OLT through a dedicated optical link
without an optical branching device between them, it is called star
networking.
Figure 21 shows the star networking mode. There is no attenuation due to the optical branching device. Therefore, the transmission distance is larger than the point-to-multipoint mode.
FIGURE 21 STAR NETWORKING

57

FSAP 9800 Technical Manual

Tree Networking

The tree topology is point-to-multipoint structure, as shown in

Figure 22. This structure uses a series of DPs to branch the signals
to multiple users. These DPs aggregate uplink signals together and
send them to the OLT. The branching devices at the DP are configured in 1:N.
FIGURE 22 TREE NETWORKING

Bus Networking

The bus topology is also a point-to-multipoint structure, as shown

in Figure 23. Actually, from the OLT to the DP, it is the bus structure. From the DP to the ONU, it is the star structure. In such a
structures, the DP sends signals from the OLT to the ONU on the
bus. Meanwhile, the DP inserts the signals coming from the ONU
to the bus and sends them to the OLT.

Q-in-Q VLAN
Networking

Q-in-Q VLAN networking

VLAN stacking

Enterprise network dedicated line application

IP hotel application

IPTV application

FSAP 9800 supports Q-in-Q VLAN networking application. Figure

26 shows the networking mode.
FIGURE 26 Q-IN-Q VLAN NETWORKING

Enterprise subscribers access the FSAP 9800 through xDSL, bearing in VLAN mode. The VLAN1 and VLAN2 subscribers access FSAP
9800 through the port of VLAN ID 3. The Q-in-Q VLAN function is
enabled on FSAP 9800.
FSAP 9800 allocates the public network VLAN IDs to subscriber
packets uniformly and forwards them to the upper-layer network.
The packet is forwarded through the backbone network of MAN according to the public network VLAN ID. When the packet arrives at
the other side of the backbone network, the public network VLAN
ID is removed and the packet is resumed. Then, the resumed

60

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

Chapter 4 Networking Application

packet is forwarded to the user-side device. The packet forwarded

in the backbone network has two 802.1q tags: the public network
tag and the private network tag.
The advantage of this networking mode is that the tagged subscriber packets can be allocated with the public network VLAN IDs
uniformly and the packets can be transmitted in the backbone network according to the public network VLAN IDs. This greatly saves
the VLAN ID resources of the public network. It meets the requirements of the point-to-point dedicated line cross-MAN connection
by the private VLAN subscribers.
VLAN Stacking

FSAP 9800 supports VLAN stacking networking application. Figure

27 shows the networking mode.
FIGURE 27 VLAN STACKING

The subscriber packet of VLAN Stacking is untagged. The untagged packet is encapsulated with two layers of VLAN ID (SP
VLAN + Customer VLAN) after arriving at FSAP 9800. The packet
is transmitted upon SP VLAN in the backbone network. After the
packet arrives at FSAP 9800 on the other side of the backbone
network, it checks the ID table and obtains the ID of the output
PVC. Then, the packet is output through the VLAN stacking port
after the two layers of VLAN IDs are removed.
VLAN stacking is used for port location. VLAN stacking meets the
subscriber demands of VLAN expansion and dedicated line batch
service. If VLAN stacking is applied to extend the VLAN number
and identify subscribers, BAS is required. If it is used to provide
the dedicated line batch service, it is required that the upper-layer
network is in layer-2 working mode. The service is forwarded
based on the VLAN and MAC address.
Enterprise
Network
Dedicated Line
Application

Medium/small or large enterprises have great requirements on

bandwidth. However, the requirement cannot be fulfilled because
there are few fiber resources or the fiber cannot reach the destination. FSAP 9800 uses the existing twisted-pairs to provide high
bandwidth to subscribers. In the medium/small or large enterprise networking, FSAP 9800 is uplinked to the L3 exchange and
connected to the headquarters or the networks of other divisions.
Figure 28 shows the enterprise networking.
