Section 1
Consider the skills listed below and rate how important you think each skill is for employment and how competent you are in
this skill. Consider how each of these skills may enhance your performance, and allow you to develop and advance further.
You may wish to discuss these with your advisor of studies. Alternatively, you may wish to ask a friend or family member, and
to compare and discuss your separate findings.
Once you have rated yourself, multiply the number in the column marked Competence with that in the column Job
Importance. So, for example, if you feel that you are not very proficient in verbal and written communication (i.e. you have
rated your competence at 4), but that these skills are very important for employment (i.e. you have rated it at 5), then your
overall total score would be 5 X 4 = 20.
Section 2
This section will provide you with examples of the types of evidence you can provide to demonstrate your level of
competence with each skill.

Skill Area
Action Pan for Development and where you can access these
1.
I believe I can take part in more sports or activities where I can learn to skills which I can transfer over to
my academic studies.
4 x 5 = 20
2.
Ability to create a database
4 x 4 = 16
Due to my inexperience in using Microsoft access I am not very able in creating a database. I can use
the program more often and teach myself how to create good databases, in doing so I can create a
database on how I can plan my work better.

Verbal:
Informal ability to network easily with other people
Tutorials, socially (making friends, making contacts), gathering or giving information, for example for a holiday or to solve a problem at
work or to arrange an outing (in person or over the telephone) I have on many occasions gathered information for holidays and also to
organize nights out with friends. I have been able to do this over the phone, by text and also in person.
Formal ability to express self clearly and concisely to a group of people
Presentations university/school/clubs/committees/interviews I am very able to clearly present myself in front of a group of people as I have
many times before. One example of me doing this is in college where I had to present myself in front of my English class.
Non-verbal:
Listening ability to attend actively to others views and ideas and understand their point of view.
Lectures (evidenced from good notes and good results!), in groups/teams, peer tutoring, supporting/counselling others, ability to take
instructions (e.g. when learning a new skill music, driving, sport). I am clearly very able to do this. The evidence is clear as in almost all of
my lessons in college I make notes when I need to of when my teacher is speaking about work. This results in me doing better in my
assignments. I also take instructions very well as I always do what I am told.
Body Language ability to match body language appropriately to what is being said verbally
Body language (eye contact, posture, movement, expression, etc) in presentations, socially, on holidays, at work. I am always matching my
body language to what I am saying verbally. I use ways to express myself when speaking by doing things such as hand gestures and facial
expressions. I also make sure that when speaking with people that I also make eye contact with them and my posture is straight.
Sensitivity- Ability to respond appropriately to individual differences, e.g., age, gender, etc.
You many have developed this skill through working on a student nightline or help line, being a course or hall rep, committee work etc. I
would say that I definitely need more experience in this department as I have not had the pleasure of being a part of any of the above.
Leadership - Ability to encourage and motivate others
Obvious examples include: being a team captain, drama directing, chairing a committee etc. Less obvious examples include: editing a magazine, cocoordinating the activities of a group who are planning a social event etc. I have motivated others before in doing things that they should when they are
feeling doubtful. For example one time I motivated my friends to work harder in their college coursework to achieve a better grade.
APPLICATION OF NUMBER
Calculations
Interpretation -
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
File Management Techniques - Ability to create, store and retrieve files. In college I always saved my coursework to a USB when I was done
with my work so I could finish it at home and also to keep as backup.
Have you ever - Saved a file to disk to print in university? In college I have not printed any disks with any of my work.
Accessed information on the university network? In college I have accessed information many times using their student
intranet. The student intranet holds information about a lot of stuff in regards in the college. For example I use the student intranet
to find out term times and holidays.
Word Processing - Ability to use a word processing package to produce a variety of formats of documents
Have you produced letters, CVs, coursework, posters, and flyers? I am very proficient in using Microsoft word and have been able to
produce many types of documents such as letters, coursework and flyers. I created my own CV using Microsoft word to use to apply for
jobs.
Spreadsheets - Ability to use a spreadsheet to record and manipulate different sets of data
Can you: -Input information? , Produce graphs? , Use formula to calculate averages, maximums, totals etc? In college I have used Microsoft
excel to create spreadsheets for a lot of my coursework. I had a finance unit where I had to create a breakeven chart and display the
information on a spreadsheet. From my experience of using Microsoft excel I can input information and use formulas to make calculations
and produce graphs to show statistics.
Databases - Ability to retrieve information from a database/ Ability to create a database
Can you: - Run queries?, View reports? , Use macros, Use tables to view the information you want? Etc Due to my insufficient experience of
using Microsoft access I am unable to be able to use the program as a casual user. I should use the program more so I am able to use it if
there is a time when I need to.
Can you: - Create tables?, Create relationships?, Design queries? Etc. Due to my insufficient experience of using Microsoft access I am
unable to be able to use the program as a casual user. I should use the program more so I am able to use it if there is a time when I need to.
Presentations - Ability to create and display a PowerPoint presentation
Have you ever used PowerPoint to produce a presentation for a lecture/tutorial? In my English GCSE class I had to create a presentation on a
topic which interested me. I then had to present my presentation to the whole class and talk about it.
Can you produce a presentation with graphics/moving images?
Information and Communication - Ability to send and receive email
Can you use web mail such as Hot Mail? I use my email services every day so I am well aware of all the features of using it.
Have you used windows based email such as MS Outlook or Pegasus. I have an outlook email address and use it on a daily basis to check my
emails.
Ability to send and receive attachments as email
Have you forwarded your CV to an employer? When I finished my CV I applied for some jobs online and was called for some interviews by
some of the employers that I applied to.
Forwarded coursework to a lecturer? In college the way that we hand in coursework is done by google classroom online and this is how we
submit our assignments.
PROBLEM SOLVING
Creativity - Ability to generate new ideas or conceive existing ideas in a new way
Perhaps you have found a new way of approaching your coursework or taken over a project from someone else bringing a fresh approach to
achieving a goal. Do you produce publicity materials for a charity? When doing my coursework I used to do it all on the word document,
however I found a new way of doing it which was to write it up as a brief in my notebook and then type it up later. This was a very useful
method as I was able to concentrate more on the task and also think of better ideas.
Organisation and Planning - Ability to set down a systematic sequence of activities and carry them through in an effective manner
Perhaps you have organised a group holiday or club event; do you use a diary or action plan for successful study/revision? I have on many
occasions organised and planned nights out with friends through phone and texts.
Research - Ability to gather information in a systematic way to establish certain facts or principles
Perhaps you have looked into different options for a place at university live or conducted research for an assignment / project. Writing an
article for a journal or magazine. When I was applying for a place at university I had researched all the different universities which I was
interested in going to and researched the courses at different unis. I then made my decision based on what the entry requirements were and
the actual uni itself.
Analysis - Ability to understand and summarise information (Detailed examination of structure and content)
Perhaps you enjoy digging into or interrogating a topic or concept for better awareness such as reading articles in a broadsheet paper or
professional journal. Consider your examples of independent study such as academic essays and dissertations. I sometimes like to watch or
read the news in my spare time. This keeps up to date with the latest affairs around the world and I get to learn new things.
plan which is to work in the law sector. I also plan to get some work experience at a law firm so that after I finish my degree I have more
of a chance to find work. In my spare time I have also prepared a CV for myself which contains my personal information foe employers
to look at. I tried to sell myself as best as I could so that I stand out above other competitors for jobs.
Effective learning ability to learn from a range of situations and apply learning in a variety of contexts
Have you developed skills from a hobby or sport that you have transferred across to your academic studies? A good skill which I have picked
up is having good communication, English and maths skills which I learnt from doing optional charity work which was a hobby of mine. I
did this for a couple of months and I was able to transfer this over to my academic studies. I improved my English and Maths skills by
working at the till and talking with customers who came into the store. This has helped me in my studies as I could write better in my
assignments and also helped me in my GCSE Maths.
Reasoning skills ability to defend argument using logical and systematic thinking based on sound evidence
Do you make best use of a wide range of sources from books and articles when presenting arguments in essays and seminars? When I am
defending an argument I always use the best sources I can find to back up my argument. From researching information online to reading
books I will make my statements based on my findings and also reference them when possible. This is evident in my assignments as in every
assignment I will be required to provide references of sources of information.
Reflection ability to reflect on and critique own performance
Do you make use of feedback received from one assignment to help you plan the next assignment? Do you regularly take dedicated time out
to reflect more deeply on your learning? Are you able to accept and learn from failure in a positive manner? I always make use of my
feedback given from assignments. I read my feedback and try my best to improve myself. This helps me in future assignments as I know
what not to do next time which improves the quality of my work. I am always able to accept failure as everyone fails at something at one
point. For example when I receive a resubmission for assignments I read the comments given to me improve my work to push to up to the
standard I need.
Study Skills - Ability to manage and prioritise time to meet deadlines.
- Ability to identify relevant sources of information, including people and reference material
- Ability to use a library to find books and journal articles
- Ability to take notes, organize them, and integrate them with other sources of information
- Ability to reference materials using an appropriate system, e.g., Harvard or Vancouver
These are very specific statements and you should be able to provide the required evidence. The kinds of questions you should be asking
yourself are: - Do you use a timetable to organize assignments and prepare for exams?, Do you use a diary to record times and locations of
classes and adviser of study sessions? Are you fully aware of how you learn most effectively and make full use of the current range of
learning opportunities available to you? etc. When doing my assignments I aim to do some work frequently well before the deadline date so I
am prepared to meet the deadline and also so that my work will be up to a good standard. When I had my exams for Maths and English I
was always practicing past papers so I was prepared for the actual exam. When doing assignments I will always reference my sources using a
tool called Neils Toolbox which is a Harvard referencing tool. I also have a timetable for all of my classes so that I am aware of what time to
be at my lesson and also where to go. When I did my previous units I used to go to the library and take out the required book to help me with
my assignments. I also always take notes in lesson, when my teacher is going through assignments I take notes to help me with my
assignment so I know what I am doing.
