EVOLUTION OF HIP HOP

In 1970s hip hop as music and culture formed during

the 1970s when block parties became increasingly
popular in New York City, particularly among African
American youth residing in the Bronx. It developed as
part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four
key stylistic elements: rapping, scratching, break
dancing, and graffiti writing. Other elements include
sampling (synthesis) and beatboxing.

The 1980s marked the diversification of hip hop as

the genre developed more complex styles. New York
City became the home for the creation of hip hop

ALTERNATIVE HIP HOP

Alternative hip hop developed in the late 1980s in midst of the golden
age of hip hop and was headed primarily by East Coast rappers
such as De La Soul, Beastie Boys, Pete Rock & C.L..Smooth, Jungle
Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubian and Digable Planets.
Alternative hip hop is a genre thatrefuses to conform to any of
the traditional stereotypes of rap, such as gangsta, funk, bass,
hardcore, and party rapand that, instead, itblurs genres, drawing
equally from funk and pop/rock, as well as jazz, soul, reggae, and
even folk.
This song is called Say no go by one of the alternative hip hop artists
called De La Soul and this song was released in 1989. This song is
a good example of alternative hip hop because it uses a range of
the typical instruments used in alternative hip hop such as guitars,
drums,vocals.

CHRISTIAN HIP HOP

Christian hip hop emerged from urban communities in
the United States in the 1980s, when it existed
almost exclusively in small underground scenes,
with minimal formal industry promotion and little
mainstream attention. The typical instruments used
in this Christian hip hop would be turntable which is
a circular revolving plate supporting a record as it is
played, vocals, a sampler, synthesizer, a drum
machine and a piano

EXPERIMENTAL HIP HOP

Experimental hip hop also known as abstract hip hop is a
genre of hip hop that employs structural elements
typically considered unconventional in traditional hip hop
music. Experimental hip hop is believed to have
originated during hip hops golden age usually thought
of as occurring from the mid 1980s and the mid 1990s.
Below there is one of the artists that sang experimental hip
hop back when this subgenre started, I chose this song
because I think its a good example of this kind of hip
hop. This song includes some of the typical instruments
used in experimental hip hop such as vocals, electronics,
drums and guitars

HIP HOP IN 1980S

I have chosen the song "Fight for your right" by The Beastie
Boys and it was released in February 1987 and this song is a
type of rap-rock music and this means is a combination of
rock music with rap vocals.
This song clearly represent rap - rock as the music uses
instruments like the guitar and drums which are classic rock
instruments but the vocals sounds more like talking which is
how rap started (came from toasting in the 70s)
This is different to toasting as it is performed with live
instruments rather than a DJ/electronic sounds.

HIP HOP IN 1990S

I have chosen the "Changes" by 2pac.
This song was released in 1998 and its and example of
west coast rap.
West coast rap is a sub-genre of hip hop and gangsta
rap that started in the 1990's.West Coast refers to the
west coast of America specifically California. West Coast
rap was a development from gangsta rap in the 80's and
continued to use the same musical features e.g.
electronic beats and lyrics about a gangsta lifestyle.
I have chosen this song to represent West Coast Rap as
it is one of 2pac's most well known songs. He was a key
artist of West Coast Rap in particular because of his
rivalry with the East Coast Rap scene

HIP HOP IN 2000S

i have chosen the song the real slim shady by Eminem.
This song was released in 2000 and it represents comedy
rap which is a sub-genre of hip hop. Comedy rap is hip
hop music which uses lyrics of a comical nature.
i have chosen this song because it takes the mickey out of
pop music.
i have chosen this song to represent the 00's because
Eminem was one of the first white people to start rapping.
When listening to this song you can hear spoken words
and the beat sounds electronic as if to be pre-recorded.
