Abstract
Gravity data in Sudan are acquired in sedimentary basins that of great interest to the
petroleum companies. The basement terrains do not attract the attention of the geophysicists.
In this case, the satellite gravity qualifies itself as an alternative for studying the basement
terrains from the stand point of lithologies and structures. Geological mapping represents the
first step in deciphering the economic potentiality of an area and understanding its tectonic
evolution. The traditional field-based mapping is not operational in terms of time, man power
and costs. The utilization of remote sensing data in geological mapping have opened new
horizon in mapping large areas in relatively short time frame, with little labors and low costs.
However, remote sensing depends on the surface reflectance of the materials under
investigation. Accordingly, areas characterized by poor rock exposures are hardly mapped via
remote sensing means. The satellite gravity has the capability of revealing the unseen
geological structures. Therefore, the objectives of the present study is to map areas
characterized by poor rock exposures through an integrated methodology that incorporates
the used of remote sensing together satellite gravity data. The study is conducted in different
parts of Sudan that are covered by basement rocks or occupied by sedimentary basins to
illustrate the practicality of using this integrated methodology. The outcome of the study
showed that this methodology can be used with varying degrees of success in delineating the
geological boundaries between the various lithological units at the regional scale, as
exemplified in North Kordofan State, where the boundaries of the subdued units was
accurately delineated. The dimensions and boundaries of partially exposed intrusion were
accurately mapped north of Khartoum. The basin geometry and depth to the basement were
estimated for Atbara Basin in Northern Sudan. Major structures such as Keraf-El Hawad
shear zone are clearly delineated together with the originated small basins in the northern
Butana area.
