This weekend we say good-bye to the Paulist Fathers and thank them for
their ministry to our parish for 104 years.
Join us after both Masses to wish Fr. Charlie, Fr. Michael and Fr. Bill
well in their new assignments and to thank our visiting Paulists for their
ministry to our parish in earlier assignments here.
God be with each and every Paulist in their many ministries. Go in peace
with our love, prayers and forever gratitude.

Pastoral Corner
Go out to all the world and tell the Good News. This is the primary mission of Jesus Christ, the
Church, the Paulist Fathers and St. Philip Neri parish. Upon the founding of the Paulist Community in 1858,
Fr. Hecker wrote to a friend: We have the encouragement of a number of bishops, and also, we trust, the
prayers, sympathy, and assistance of the faithful. We shall have obstacles to face, opposition from friends
and foes; but if we are the right kind of men and have the virtues which such a position as ours demands,
our trials will only strengthen us and make us better Christians. Preaching primarily to non-Catholics in
New York City the community quickly established parishes on the West Coast and St. Philip Neri Church was
a parish established and placed in the charge of the Paulist Fathers on February 12, 1912.
Outreach to non-Catholics, the unchurched, and the spiritually curious has been a hallmark of our
parish. While nurturing a vibrant local community; from the first, the Paulists sent missionaries throughout
the North West and beyond. Missionaries like Fr. Jack OKeefe, CSP and Fr. Vincent Sampietro, CSP
continued their missionary activity well into their 70s and 80s.
A concerted effort to reach out to parishes in the Portland Archdiocese and to implement the newly
minted R.C.I.A. model of instruction for those seeking membership in the Church, Fr. John Hurley, CSP along
with Holy Names Sister Pat Nizic founded the Paulist Center for Evangelization.
Hospitality has always been a foundational quality at St. Philips. Not only has this been evident upon
entering the church but in so many social activities: like the Rigatoni Luncheon and Spaghetti Dinner, drawing
hundreds, even people far beyond our parish boundaries. The Paulist Center began a yearly Wine Tasting
event again drawing people far and wide.
Peace and Justice and a concern for the environment has taken center stage in recent years. Muddy
Boot, a yearly three day festival of all things environmental again drew large crowds. Food collection for
the poor and homeless and a yearly Thanksgiving Day Dinner for homeless and otherwise people with no
place to go on this holiday keep us aware of those less fortunate than ourselves.
The Altar Society has been tireless in promoting events that raise funds for special projects, like the
renovation of the churchs Rose Window, and their monthly French toast breakfast that raises monies for
the new floor in Carvlin Hall and other general operating expenses. In very recent years parishioners have
stepped up to do the monthly breakfast through the summer months and another group began our yearly
Seafood Fest, a very classy event. While fundraising is always a pain and so necessary we seem to be able
to make them fun and a means of outreach to the wider community of Portland.
Creating a place of inclusive hospitality for all is endemic to the mission of the Paulist Fathers and
St. Philip Neri parish. The LGBTQ community, singles, divorced and separated, anyone with special needs
and challenges all need to feel welcomed and supported when we gather for prayer or just fun times. No
one should ever be excluded and it is the Paulist hope that this quality be our legacy and on-going gift to
this community of faith.
I dare say that every Paulist assigned here has been enriched in their ministry by your allowing us
to be a part of your lives. Thank you. Now, continue to go forth and tell the Good News.
Respectfully Submitted by Fr. Michael E Evernden, CSP
