Write a brief summary or blog of your experiences teaching this lesson,
addressing the following questions:

What went well? What did not go well? (Cite specific examples)

How well were the lessons student performance objectives

attained?

Did classroom activity center on science understanding, inquiry,

and sense-making by all students?

Did your scientific content knowledge enable you to support

students construction of knowledge and understanding of
important scientific concepts and processes?

When you have the opportunity to re-teach this lesson, what will
you do differently (strategies, teaching tools, assessments, etc.)
to improve student learning for all students?

During this lesson students were taught how to navigate the

quadcopter drones using the controls with a mini-iPad. I started out
this lesson with an engaging mini-lesson on how farmers use drones to
check out their crops in distant fields instead of spending countless
hours driving around the perimeter. So, the students were able to
make a connection to how drones are used in an every-day situation,
as well as, why and how they were going to be using this type of
technology during their space volcano mission. Splitting the students
into small groups to learn how to fly the drones was a good idea
because we only have 3 to work with. Students did get impatient but I
saw this as an opportunity to have other students serve as navigators
until it was their turn to fly.
The students did a great job attaining the lessons performance
objectives while they learned how to navigate the drones. As they took
turns flying the drones, you could see the students get more
comfortable with the controls on the iPad and that was the main
objective of the lesson.
This lesson contained classroom activity that centered on making
a connection between the technology they were learning and how
aerospace engineers can use the same technology to gather data for
research. The students worked well together to achieve their goal of
learning how to fly the drones.
My scientific content knowledge enabled me to support students
construction of knowledge and understanding because I was able to
demonstrate and assist students in learning how to fly the drones with
the iPads. It was important for students to see that I was comfortable
with the controls so that they were not afraid to try it.
In the future when I reteach this lesson I will hopefully have more
drones so that there will be less students waiting and helping other
students out. There was no need for an assessment because students
were learning the controls so that they could simulate taking data for
their future mission.
