Annotated Bibliography: Money Lost: Bucks or Does?
My argument essay is going to be about the monetary damage to the agricultural
environment that overpopulated white-tail deer herd causes and what can be done to help limit
this damage. I want to bring to light the value that is being lost in the agricultural community. I
also want to show what steps are currently being done to limit this damage, if these steps are
productive or not, and other steps or solutions that can be used to keep the monetary loss at a
minimum while still preserving the white-tail deer population. We need to live as one cohesive
ecosystem benefiting all.

This web article features a background on the habits of white-tail deer and the solutions to take
to limit deer damage to personal property. This research was conducted by specialists from the
University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Nebraska. This information will be
useful in multiple sections of my paper, including the section on the common signs of deer
damage and the solutions currently being used to minimize deer damage.

This ODNR Wildlife Division web article gives the results of the number of deer taken during
the 2011- 2012 hunting season. These numbers are derived from the deer taken reported by
hunters through the ODNR Wildlife reporting system. The author includes this years numbers
compared to last years numbers, broken down by counties to show the difference between the
two years. The article also shows that roughly 20,000 fewer deer were taken in 2012 compared to
2011. This information will be useful in the section of my essay showing how the deer
population is on the rise.

This research article sponsored by the Pennsylvania State University shows how restricting
private land from hunters can impact everyone in the area in regard to deer population and the
damage caused by overpopulation. The article chooses three counties in Pennsylvania with the
most registered private land ownerships and provides information on what the deer population is,
the losses reported from deer damage, and what the land owners in the restricted area are doing
to help preserve their property. This information will be used in the section addressing what
causes the deer population to explode and the damages resulting from it.

This journal article from the United States Department of Agricultural explains how coyote hair
can be used as a deterrent to keep white-tail deer away from plants and other foliage. The author
includes a description of the damage caused by white-tail deer and how this damage is affecting
farmers, nurseries, and neighborhoods. The article also includes the data from multiple
experiments and how they were concluded. This information will be helpful in the section of my
essay that will explain the damage being done and the current solutions to minimize deer
damage.

This journal article covers a wide range of information in regard to the overabundance of whitetail deer, the damage they cause and the possible diseases that arise from this damage. The author
includes losses to agriculture and vegetation, the impact on ecosystems and the management
issues that have been seen throughout the years. The author concludes by discussing different
scenarios of what may happen if there is not some control put on this subject. I can include this
information in multiple sections of my paper, including the sections on the causes of deer
overabundance, ecosystem imbalances, and, ultimately, how easily the damage can be turned
around.
