Writing
TSW write sentences using verbs that are past tense, present tense, and future tense.
Step by Step Lesson Outline
Before
TTW begin the lesson by asking the students to come to the rug for a whole group lesson
on verbs. TTW engage the students in the lesson and activate their prior knowledge by
asking them what they know about verbs, and asking for examples of verbs as they view
slide 1 of the power point. The teacher will guide the class in a quick introductory
discussion of verbs before doing some examples on slide 2 of the power point.
During
TTW display slide 2. TTW choose students one at a time using equity sticks to find the
verb in each group of words. The teacher will use the mobi to circle student answers.
TTW then explain present tense verbs (slide 3). The teacher will say, We know a verb is
present tense if it ends in an s. For example mom cooks means that she is cooking
right now. After slide 3 is discussed TTW choose students one at a time using equity
sticks. TTW ask the students to fill in the correct verb in each sentence using the word
bank (slide 4). TTW write in the students answers using the mobi. Once answers are
recorded TTW explain past tense verbs (slide 5). The teacher will say, Most past tense
verbs end in ed. For example if the little girl jumped rope, we know that she did it in the
past. TTW then choose students one at a time using equity sticks. Each student will
change a verb to past tense using slide 6 as their guide. After all five verbs are changed
to have ed endings TTW explain future tense verbs (slide 7). TTW say, If a verb is
future tense that means it has not happened yet, but it will in the future. If I say, The
children will play with the ball again tomorrow I am using future tense. The verb is
play, but by adding will before the verb we make the verb future tense. TTW use
equity sticks to have students look at a sentence and decide if the verb is future tense or
not. TTW circle or mark through a sentence as the students answer using the mobi.
Once the teacher is confident that the students have a firm grasp on verbs and verb
tense, she will walk over to each table and explain the stations to the students. TTW say,
At this station (station 1) you will each get a set of task cards. Each set is the same. You
will also get a recording sheet. As you go through each card you will read the sentence
and the answer choices. You will choose a, b, or c. Once you have chosen your answer
record it using this sheet [teacher will hold up task card recording sheet]. At this station
(station 2) you will need scissors and a glue stick. You will read the words in the work
bank at the bottom. You will cut them out one column at a time. You will glue the verbs
under the correct tense. For example, will jump would go under the word future
because it is a future tense verb. At this station (station 3) You will need a die and a
piece of paper with the verbs on it. You will roll the die to see which verb you will use.
Read the verb aloud to yourself and then write a sentence using that verb. Be aware of
verb tense. If your word is jumped you would not say I like to jumped. We will also be
reading a book at the teacher table today. We will stop after each page and look for
verbs to add to a graphic organizer. If at any time you finish before time is up, I have
something for you to do at iPad station. You will use this sheet [teacher will show QR
code sheet] and your QR code scanning app to learn more information about verbs. As
you finish your work I want you to turn them in to this basket [teacher will show basket].
I will look at them later and if it is correct and complete I will give you a smiley. The
groups will rotate four times until each group has been to each station. The teacher will
use a timer to keep up with rotations. Each station will have 10 minutes.
After
Once each group has rotated to each station TTW bring the lesson to a close. The
teacher may review if she feels it is necessary. TTW take up student work. Students will
resume normal schedule.
