Who is Mahdi (atfs) ?
He is the authority of the Last
Luminous Jewel of Allah He it is
who will decide the end of the
long struggle between truth and
falsehood. His appearance will
mean a victory for truth and the
annihilation of falsehood.
He will remove ignorance and
class-discrimination from the
world and will establish equality
instead; he will exploit the
earth‟s resources distribute them
among the poor and make them
sufficient.
The outburst of enthusiasm and
happiness will at that time cause
tears to flow down the cheeks of
enthusiasts, and the lustrous and
mournful eyes of the awaiting
people will be filled with light.
Mahdism (Mahdaivat) is the
most genuine and fundamental
Islamic belief, which even a
person with a limited knowledge
of Islam will surely accept.
Shaikh Mofeed, a distinguished
Shiite scholar, also wrote is
Irshad:
THE SHIITES DURING THE IMAM’S OCCULTATION
Are we among the real followers
of Imam Mahdi (atfs) ?
If we study the lives of the de-
vout Shiites (followers) of the
Holy Imams before the Twelfth
Imam and consider their sacrific-
es without the slightest hesita-
tion, we shall at once awake
from our neglectful slumber and
realize our weakness and guilt.
Were not Salman al-Farsi, Abu
Zal al-Ghifari, Ammar bin Yasir
and Malik-e-Ashtar the follow-
ers of the contemporary Imam
Ali, Ameer al Momineen (A-S),
and are we too the followers of
Imam of our Age?
Were not the martyrs of Karbala,
who with love strove in the way
of defending the Imam of their
time, Husain (a.s.), and were
martyred, and are we too the
followers of Imam Mahdi (atfs),
who refuse to give our wealth
“When Imam Hassan al-
Askari (A.S) passed away, the
caliph of that time pursued his
son. Because the Shiite Imamy-
ya‟s belief was famous and was
spread about that the Shiites
were awaiting his Eminence.
Mu‟tamid, one of the tyrant Ab-
basid caliphs who ruled from
279 to 289 A.H., decided all at
once to destroy the entire family
of al-Askari when he heard that
more of Imam Hassan Askari
(A.S) and that he was still living
in spite of the attempts of the
preceding caliph to kill him.
One of Mu‟tamid‟s officers said:
“Mu‟tamid has ordered me and
two other persons, each of us to
mount a horse and to proceed to
Samara in full speed without
even stopping for prayer. He
gave us the address of Imam al-
Askari (A-S) and instructed us to
enter his house without his per-
mission and to bring him the
head of whoever we find there.”
As a matter of fact, they were
(Khums), lives and other means
in the way of the Imam of our
time.
A person like Hisham bin
Hakam is a follower of the Imam
of his time, who in his extraordi-
nary and valuable debates
crushed and defamed the oppo-
nents of the Devine Leadership
(Imamate) in such a way that he
was called the “assistant of the
Imam” by Imam as-Sadiq (a.s).
And are we too, who are slug-
gish in fulfilling our foremost
duty to recognize the Imam of
our time, Shiites and follower of
Imam Mahdi (atfs)?
From what we read of the glad
tiding in the Quran and the tradi-
tions of the Holy Prophet and the
infallible Imam, the Imam of the
Age (Imam-e-Zaman) has spe-
cial responsibilities that other
Imams did not have Imam-e-

unaware that the same power
that had protected the Imam
from the former caliphs would
give him protection from his
evil, because:
Allah disdains (nothing) save
that He shall perfect his light,
however much the disbelievers
are averse. (Quran, 9:32)
Is it not more amazing that Al-
mighty Allah has shown His
power many times before, so that
after that all men should know
that if He wishes to give His
chosen servant government and
sovereignty and to destroy infi-
delity and irreligiousness
through him, then there is no one
who can disrupt his rule.
His (a.s)’s Birth – Dawn of a
New Era
At dawn, on the 15th Sha‟ban
255 A.H., the rays of the illumi-
nating world shone with a pow-
erful shaft of light into a human
form, which became the source
of existence for the universe.
Yes, finally, the Divine promise
Zaman will establish Universal
Government. He will fill the
earth with righteousness and
justice, He will exploit the
earth‟s treasures and natural
resources, He will improve and
develop the land, and in this way
people‟s awareness and under-
standing will improve.
It is an necessary for us to have
recognition of the Imam of our
time, and know what are our
responsibilities and duties to-
wards him (a.s.).
Imam Sadiq (a.s.) says; “One
who dies without the recogni-
tion of the Imam of his time,
dies the death of ignorance.”
One who is waiting and prepar-
ing himself for the appearance of
the Imam Mahdi (a.s.) must have
characters and merits of the
companions of Imams before
Imam Mahdi (a.s.). So, we
was fulfilled and Imam al- Mah-
di (atfs) was born inspite of the
efforts of those who denied him.
Imam Hassan al Askari (A-S)
beheld the heavenly, shining
face of his son who was to full
fill all divine promises and glad
tiding. Not more than three days
had passed after his birth when
the eleventh Imam took the holy
child to his companions and told
them:
After me this will be your master
of authority and my successor,
and he is the support (al-Qaaim)
for whose appearance all people
will wait; when the earth is full
of injustice and tyranny, he will
fill it with peace and justice.
should pray to Allah that He may
include us among those who are
waiting for the Imam of the age,
and that our acts and conduct
may also symbolize the truth of
our claim.
Shiites must have a strong link
with Imam e Zamana (atfs) dur-
ing the periof of occultation.
Their prayers should be to ask
for blessing of Allah to be show-
ered on Imam(a.s.), and their
supplication should be of salva-
tion. Their existence should be
one welded and fused unit, and

Some of the Issues related to
Taqlid and following a Marja`
in our Daily actions.
Who must Perform Taqlid of a
Marja`?
1. Either a person is a Mujtahid;
2. Or he acts according to Ihtiyat
( Muhtat );
3. Or he does neither of the two,
meaning he performs Taqlid of a
Marja`. IF A PERSONDOES
NOT FALL INTO THE FIRST
TWO CATEGORIES, THEN
HE MUST DO TAQLID.
To whom can we perform
Taqlid of? The person whom we
want to do Taqlid of MUST
fulfill the following condi-
tions:1) Male, 2) Baligh, 3)
`Aqil, 4) Shi`a Ithna `Asheri, 5)
Legitimate Birth, 6) Alive, 7)
`Adil, 8) According to Ihtyat
Wajib, he must not have love of
the material word within him
and 9) He must be most
knowledge (`Alam) of all of his
contemporary Scholars.
What issues do we do Taqlid
on?1.We are not permitted to do
Taqlid on matters of Usul ad-Din
– issues such as Tawhid,
Nubuwwah, Imamah, Ma`ad,
`Adalah and all other theological
beliefs – we must accept these
on our own. In addition, there is
no Taqlid on issues of the
“Necessities of the Religion”
such as the Salat, Khums, Hajj,
etc.. being Wajib.
2. Taqlid is ONLY permitted in
the practical laws of Islam which
we learn from our Mujtahid.
How many categories can the
practical laws of Islam be bro-
ken up into? What are their
names and definitions?
WAJIB: Those acts which
MUST be performed and inten-
tionally leaving them will earn
the person a sin and punishment,
such as performing the Salat,
Fasting, Hajj, Khums, etc…once
you reach to the age of maturity.
MUSTAHAB: Those acts which
SHOULD be performed and if
they are done, you get a reward,
however if you do not perform
them, there is no harm, such as
wearing white clothing during
the Salat, Qunut in the salat.
MUBAH: Those acts which it
makes no difference if you per-
form or do not perform as there
is no reward or punishment such
as eating food or drinking water.
MAKRUH: Those acts which
SHOULD be refrained from and
if they are refrained from, you
get a reward, however if you
perform them, there is no harm,
such as wearing black clothing
during the Salat.
HARAM: Those acts which
MUST NOT be performed and
intentionally performing then
will earn the person a sin and
punishment, such as drinking
alcohol, smoking drugs, lying,
stealing, backbiting, etc…
Various Issues related to Taqlid
– once we have picked a Mujta-
hid to follow in our daily ac-
tions. How can we tell who is a
Mujtahid? 1. A person himself
has certainty and can recognize
who the Mujtahid and most
knowledgeable is.
2. Two Knowledgeable and Just
people who can identify the
Mujtahid and most knowledgea-
ble tell us as long as two other
people do not go against their
word.
3. One Scholar whom we know
can recognize the Mujtahid and
most knowledgeable whom we
trust informs us who the most
knowledgeable person is.
How can we find out his Rul-
ings?
1. We hear it directly from the
Mujtahid.
2. We hear it from two Just peo-
ple.
3. We hear it from even one per-
son whom we have trust in what
he says to us.
4. We see it in the books or writ-
ings of the Mujtahid and we trust
that written source.
What if our Mujtahid dies?
1. It is not permitted to start
Taqlid of a dead Mujtahid, how-
ever if a person was in his Taqlid
and he dies and he was the most
knowledgeable, you must stay in
his Taqlid.
2. If a person had acted accord-
ing to some rulings of a Mujta-
hid before he died and wants to
continue in his Taqlid after
death, he can only do so in those
issues he followed him on how-
ever for issues like Khums, he
must pick a living Mujtahid to
follow.
What about the actions of one
who did not do Taqlid?
1. If he finds out that he was
acting according to what his
responsibility was.
2. His actions coincided with the
Islamic rulings of the Mujtahid
whom he was supposed to be

What are the different conclu-
sions that the Mujtahid can
come to in an Islamic ruling
Hukm: A ruling on a particular
issue that is applicable upon all
people even those who do not
follow the Mujtahid such as
political rulings that can be is-
sued from our Scholars.
Fatawa: The “general” ruling
that the Mujtahid gives which is
only applicable to those who
follow him – those who perform
his Taqlid.
Ihtiyat Wajib: The Mujtahid
does not have clear proof to
issue a definitive ruling, thus, he
would express a ruling and then
say that according to Ihtiyat, the
following must also be per-
formed – his follower can EI-
THER act according to this rul-
ing or follow another Mujtahid
who has a clear cut Fatawa.
Ihtiyat Mustahab: Either before
or after a clear ruling, there is a
precaution (Ihtiyat) stated. Thus,
the follower must act according
to the clear ruling (fatawa) and
for precautionary sake, he should
also act according to the precau-
tion that the Mujtahid has stated
and he cannot follow another
Mujtahid on this ruling.
