The website is the main source of information for this class. Make it a habit to check the
site daily. If you are absent, check the site to get your make-up work.

Objective
The main objective for this course is to prepare students for college English by focusing
on writing, vocabulary, reading, and critical thinking. The course will follow the California
standards of education.

Materials
• Novel of choice • Index cards
• Composition Book
• Binder or notebook Suggested:
• Binder paper • MLA Handbook
• Blue or black, and red pen • Dictionary
• Highlighter pens (three colors) • Post-It ® tags

→All assignments must be written in black or dark blue ink and have a clean edge and
appearance. If I cannot read your handwriting, I will not grade the assignment.

Expectations
• Be an active learner.
• Be polite and respectful to all.
• Be on time. On time means that you are in your seat when the bell rings. Be
prepared and ready to work. Use the restroom between classes.
• Keep the classroom clean.
• No hats, cell phones, music devices
• You may use the restroom as needed, ONLY with a pass, and not within the first
or last 10 minutes of class.

Grading Policy
• Grades will be determined by your progress throughout the semester. Quarter
grades will not be averaged in order to get a semester grade.
• There will be opportunities for extra credit points, but no extra credit assignments
will be given.
• I will periodically check for materials, and you will receive participation points for
being prepared.
• In-class assignments are not optional and may not be completed for homework.
You will receive a 0, with no option to make up the work, if you do not complete
the work as assigned.
A research paper is required during the second semester. Any student who does
not complete the paper will not receive a passing grade for the semester. In
addition, all process essays are required. If you do not complete the assigned
essays, you cannot pass the class.

→Cheating, including plagiarism, will result in a zero for the assignment and your parent
will be called. Completing homework for another class while in this class will result in
confiscation of that work. While in English class, focus on English.

Citizenship
O= always follows all rules and demonstrates respect and courtesy
S= usually follows rules and is respectful and courteous
U= a total of five tardies and/or unexcused absences (per district policy), disrespect of
teacher or other students, disregard for rules, cheating, excessive cell phone/mp3 use

Homework and Make-up Policy:


Late work will only be accepted one day after it is due and for half-credit, unless
you have spoken to me and received permission to take extra time. Major
assignments may be turned in late; however, they will be marked down one full
grade for each day late. You may make up tests at lunch in room 230. You must make
up the test the day that you return to school, or it will become a 0 in the grade book. If
you are absent for more than two days, you will have one week to make up the test.
