Sec 1 – 1: Using Estimation Strategies

Objectives:
1) To estimate by rounding.
2) To use front-end estimation and compatible
numbers.
Vocabulary

1) Compatible Numbers- numbers that are

easy to compute mentally.
Ex 1) Estimating a Sum or Difference

Eagle Rays The span of an eagle ray’s fins is

3.27 m. The span of her baby’s fins is 0.88
m. Estimate the difference between the
spans. Round each span to the nearest whole
number before you find the difference.
Check Understanding: Example 1

Estimate the difference between stingrays

with spans of 1.75 m and 0.92 m.
Ex 2) Estimating a Product

A living room is 10.5 ft by 9.25 ft. Use

rounding to estimate the room’s area in
square feet.
Check Understanding: Example 2
Estimate. Round to the nearest whole number
before you multiply.

a) 7.65 x 3.12

b) 11.09 x 4.85
Ex 3) Estimating by Front-End Estimation

Shopping Suppose you want to purchase and

wrap a birthday gift. You select a
kaleidoscope for $5.39, gift wrap for $1.49,
and a greeting card for $2.95. Estimate the
total cost of your selections.
Check Understanding: Example 3
Estimate the total cost of a dog collar for
$5.79, a dog toy for $2.48, and a dog dish
for $5.99.
Ex 4) Using Compatible Numbers

Music Suppose you have $50.25. About how many

CD’s can you buy from category D?

Category Price
A $23.95*
B $15.95
C $12.95
D $7.95
*Double CD
Check Understanding: Example 4
a) Number sense Why are 48 and 8
compatible numbers?

b) About how many CD’s can you buy from

category B? Explain.

c) Reasoning Is an estimate of the price good

enough to decide if you have enough money
to buy the CD’s you want? Explain.
