Air Pollution Chart

After reviewing Ch. 8 and 9 of your text, complete the following table, and then respond to the
questions that follow:

Issue Sources Health/Environmental Effects

Carbon dioxide (CO2) Motor vehicles and Headache fatigue, reduces the bodies ability
industrial plants to transport oxygen to the brain at high levels
it causes death.
Chlorofluorocarbons Aerosol cans, air Dizziness, headache, if inhaled the can cause
(CFCs) conditioners, death, in the environment they break down the
refrigerators, ozone layer.
Ground-level ozone (O3) Formed in the air by Irritates the eyes, bronchial tract aggravates
other pollutants asthma and causes chest discomfort. Adds to
the ozone problem and could make the whole
bigger.
Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) Comes from Produces, asthma, bronchitis and sometimes
industrial plants, coal lung disease. It erodes our plant life as well as
burning plants, harms animals and their habitats.
Note: Some pollutants may not have direct health effects.

Choose one of the following atmospheric issues: air pollution, global warming, ozone depletion,
and acid deposition. Then, respond to the following: air pollution

• What air pollutants combine and contribute to this issue? Factories

especially coal burning industrial plants, air conditioners, and cars and trucks.

• Briefly describe the health and environmental problems caused by the

selected atmospheric issue. Health issues range from Allergies, Asthma, eye
irritation, bronchial infections. They affect our plants so they are unable to
provide their own food.

• Provide one key solution to help either reduce the effects or recover from
the effects of the selected issue. We must cut back on our use of motor
vehicles and find other means of transportation that do not affect our
environment. Mass transit, car pooling, and alternative energy would greatly
reduce air pollution.
