Motivation

• Motivation is a desire to achieve a goal, combined with the energy to work


towards that goal. Students who are motivated have a desire to undertake
their study and complete the requirements of their course.
• Motivation is Positive or Negative. Sometimes a distinction is made
between positive and negative motivation. Positive motivation is a
response which includes enjoyment and optimism about the tasks that you
are involved in. Negative motivation involves undertaking tasks because
there will be undesirable outcomes. eg. failing a subject, if tasks are not
completed.
• In an Organisations why motivation is necessary ?
• Motivation stimulates people and encourages them willingly to put more
effort into doing something . Well- motivated employees will feel fulfilled
and happy in the workplace

Motivation Theories
Content theories
• Focus on individual needs – that is, physiological or
psychological deficiences that we feel a compulsion to reduce
or eliminate
Process theories
• Focus on the thought or cognitive processes that take place
within the minds of people and that influence their behaviour.
Needs theories
• Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs theory
Identifies five levels of individual needs
How to motivate?
• Allow them to develop their job, to continually improve.
• Set targets for them to get a sense of achievement.
• Give them variety and interest.
• Show trust. Be open.
• Keep them in the picture.
• Empower. Allow them control over what they do.
• Tell them. A work ill-done must be done twice.
• Give regular feedback to prevent misdirection.
• Give praise. Show appreciation.
• Encourage teamwork, sense of belonging , synergy.
• Ensure conducive work environment.
• Reward them. According to their work.
