Sec 2 - 4: Solving Equations by Multiplying or
Dividing

Objectives:
1) To solve equations by dividing.
2) To solve equations by multiplying.
Key Concepts-

Division Property of Equality – If you divide each side

of an equation by the same nonzero number, the two
sides remain equal.

Multiplication Property of Equality – If you multiply

each side of an equation by the same number, the two
sides remain equal.
Ex 1) Solving Equations by Dividing

Solve 4p = 22.68.
Check Understanding: Example 1
Solve each equation. Check your answers.

a) 3x = -21.6

b) -12y = -108

c) 104x = 312
Ex 2) Real-World Problem Solving

Library Fines A library charges 6 cents

per day for an overdue book. Your fine is
96 cents. How many days late is your
book?
Check Understanding: Example 2

a) Reasoning The equation 0.06d = 0.96 also

represents the problem in Example 2. Explain.

b) Suppose you and four friends go to a baseball

game. The total cost for five tickets is $110.
Write and solve an equation to find the cost of
one ticket.
Ex 3) Solving Equations by Multiplying

Solve = -5.
Check Understanding: Example 3
