Conversion of Municipal solid Waste leachate in to Nutrient Solution for Soil Application

Municipal solid waste (MSW) has been demonstrated to be highly heterogeneous in

composition and poses a significant disposal problem. In this, Vegetable wastes from domestic
areas or industries are also created pollution problem to the environment; hence, there has been a
strong need for the optimization of vegetable waste treatment systems. Land filling of untreated
municipal solid waste (MSW) is known to lead emissions of leachate and landfill gas, above all
methane, which contributes to the green house effect. Therefore, in the present investigation an
attempt has been made to study the decaying process of organic waste materials under anaerobic
conditions. Further the fluxes of nutrients along with the changes in other physico chemical
characteristics have also been investigated in a more comprehensive manner. Three kilograms of
Vegetable wastes are selected and mixed with water in different ratios and the detailed study was
carried out on the nutrient fluctuation and other important parameters. An investigation was carried
out in the laboratory to find out the dynamics of organic decaying process under anaerobic process.
The experiment was conducted in a specially designed facility with all the necessary inputs. The
experiment was conducted for a period of 24 days. Overall, the results of the present investigation
clearly indicated that the organic degradation process is rapid during the initial days (before 15 days)
of decomposition and releases a variety of major and minor mineral nutrients along with an increase
in the microbial population. Also, there is a strong possibility of utilizing this young leachate for soil
application.
