4) = -8
Sec 2 – 10: Solving Inequalities by Multiplying
and Dividing

Objectives:
1) To solve inequalities by multiplying.
2) To solve inequalities by dividing.
Key Concepts

 Multiplication and Division Properties of

Inequality
 If you multiply or divide each side of an inequality
by a positive number, the direction of the
inequality does not change.

 If you multiply or divide each side of an inequality

by a negative number, the direction of the
inequality is reversed.
Ex 1) Real-World Problem Solving

Machinery A forklift can safely carry a load

of up to 6,000 lbs. A case of paint weighs 70
lbs. At most how many cases of paint can
the forklift carry safely at one time?
Check Understanding: Example 1
a) Check the answer to Example 1. Is it reasonable?

b) Reasoning Change the words in Example 1 so that

the corresponding inequality uses < instead of ≤.

c) A long distance telephone company is offering a

special rate of 6 cents per minute. Your budget for
long-distance phone calls is $25 for the month. At
most how many minutes of long distance can you
use for the month?
Ex 2) Solving Inequalities by Dividing

Solve -3y ≤ -27. Graph the solution.

Check Understanding: Example 2

Solve each inequality. Graph the solution.

a) -4p < 36

b) -8m ≥ -24

c) 7n > -21
Ex 3) Solving Inequalities by Multiplying

Solve ≥ 2.
Check Understanding: Example 3

Solve each inequality.

a) < -4

b) ≥6

c) ≤ -6
