Title: Characterising EVI time series by fitting parametric curves

Authors: Andries Potgieter, Kenton Lawson

Abstract:

Fitting parametric profiles to vegetation index time series reduces the volume of data and can
provide parameters that are readily related to crop phenology (e.g. sowing date, flowering). We use
non-linear least squares to estimate sigmoidal profiles for MODIS enhanced vegetation index (EVI)
16-day composite time series covering potential winter crop seasons for 2005 to 2007 for south-east
Queensland, Australia. The effectiveness of these parameters for crop classification is compared
with other data reduction methods. An additional benefit of the approach is the availability of
regression diagnostics, which indicate how well the fitted profiles match the EVI time series.
