Abstract
There has been a rising interest in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the
tourism industry which is linked to the sustainable development movement, and its
particular relevance in the industry. CSR requires organizations to demonstrate
responsible business conduct that does no harm in the marketplace, workplace, in
the community they operate in, and to the natural environment (Roberts, 2007).
Firms are having issues between having concern on sustainability or only on profit
maximization. Sustainability not only deals with the subject of environment but it is
more on the ability of firms to operate successfully in the present without
compromising its ability to operate successfully in the future. CSR is not a concern
for many firms in the tourism industry as their main concern is profit maximization,
thus they do not give importance to other aspects such as social responsibility to
the community and environment. In some cases, such as in the Spanish nation,
there has been an overdevelopment of tourist resorts and residential facilities which
has caused high environmental, economic, and social cost. We show how the
ignorance of CSR has brought about negative impacts to the environment,
community, and economy and how CSR is significant in the tourism industry.
