V Mechanical protection against :

é Tensile stress
é Abrsion
é Cutting
é Flexing
é bending

V ¸ome of these can cause macro bends and

micro bends
V Òenerally strength
member will be present
at the center of the cable
which absorbs stress
during the installation.
V ¸ome times there cannot
be strength members
and the cable rely on
outer structure to
handle stress.
V In some cases aramid
yarn is used to handle
external tension
V In the loose tube method the fiber is enclosed in
a plastic buffer-tube that is larger in inner
diameter than the outer diameter of the fiber
itself.
V This tube is filled with a silicone gel to prevent
the buildup of moisture and to repel water.
V ¸ince the fiber is basically free to "float" within
the tube, mechanical forces acting on the
outside of the cable do not usually reach the
fiber.

V The loose tube design provides stable and
highly reliable transmission parameters for a
variety of applications
V The design also permits significant
improvements in the density of fibers
contained in a given cable diameter while
allowing flexibility to suit many system
designs.
V These cables are suitable for outdoor duct,
aerial, and direct buried installations etc.,
V Different fiber types available within a cable
(hybrid construction).
V owest losses at long distances, for use in duct
aerial, and direct buried applications.
V Available with single-mode and multimode
fiber types.
V oose Tube Cable is also available with
armored construction for added protection.
V oose tube cables have lower signal
attenuation due to micro bending.
V They provide excellent isolation from external
forces.
V Under continuous mechanical stress, loose
buffer cable exhibit better transmission
characteristics.
V In the tight buffer construction, a thick coating
of a plastic-type material is applied directly to
the outside of the fiber itself.
V This results in a smaller overall diameter of the
entire cable and one that is more resistant to
crushing or overall impact- type forces.
V Because the fiber is not free to "float" however,
tensile strength is not as great
V Tight buffer cable is normally lighter in weight
and more flexible than loose-tube cable and is
usually employed for less severe applications
such as within a building or to interconnect
individual pieces of equipment.
Distribution Cable
V Distribution Cable (compact building cable)
packages individual 900µm buffered fiber
reducing size and cost when compared to
breakout cable.
V Bndoor/Outdoor Tight Buffer:
V These cables are flexible, easy to handle and
simple to install.
V ¸ince they do not use gel, the connectors can be
terminated directly onto the fiber without
difficult
Bndoor/Outdoor Breakout Cable:
V Indoor/outdoor rated breakout style cables are
easy to install and simple to terminate.
V Breakout cables are designed with all-dielectric
construction to insure MI immunity

erial Cable/Self-Supporting:
V Aerial cable provides ease of installation and
reduces time and cost.
V The term breakout means at any location along
the cable one could breakout several fibers and
route other fibers to elsewhere.
V These cables are mainly used for AN, video
systems, industrial control process etc.,
< Use a steel messenger wire
< Or internal strengthening members
< Require extra protection for
< Wind loading
< Ice loading
< Temperature variations
< Moisture ingress
< Ultraviolet deterioration

<Advantages
<Installed easily on existing
poles
<Where burial is too difficult
<Disadvantages
<¸usceptible to falling trees
<¸torm damage
V Underground cables experience less
environmental extremes than aerial cables.
V They are usually pulled into ducts or buried
directly in the ground.
V oose buffering tube is generally used to
isolated fibers from external forces
V Advantages:
V Most Cost effective method
V Òreat environmental protection when
compared to aerial cable
V More secure

V Disadvantages:
V Can be disrupted by earthworks,
farming etc.,
V Rodents biting can be problem. (Can
be over come by using steel tape
armour)
V These are outdoor cables designed
for continuous immersion in water.
V Can be used in rivers, lakes etc.,
