Washington’s Farewell Address

Washington will not seek 3rd term. States join the union under the Washing-
ton administration. Every President has followed George Washington. His
speech to America was written in 1792 by James Madison. In his speech he
warns against secularism, he is not for partisanship. The third warning was
no permanent foreign alliances. He died in 1799.

Election of 1796

First election to have parties the federalist elect John Adams and T Pickney
for vice president. The Republicans take Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr. Al-
exander Hamilton wanted to run but people hated him, instead Hamilton
gets involved. Hamilton wants Pickney to win he thinks Pickney will be a pup-
pet. The second phase of his plan was that Hamilton gets South Carolina to
keep votes from Adams. The New England states find out Hamilton’s plan
and they keep votes from Pickney. For the first time we have a president and
vice president from different parties.

XYZ Affair

French is mad Jay’s treaty by 1797 French has impressed more that 300
American ships. These three men are sent to negotiate France Talleyrand’s
agents dem a $250000 bribe, a 12 million loan and an apology. John Adams
reveals a plot he is going to name the agents. He doesn’t give their real
names, he gives them the names, X, Y, Z.

We will pay millions to protect ourselves.

Alien and Sedation Acts 1798

Republicans oppose undeclared war on France in response to XYZ. Federalist

regime, Adams, Alien Act, Alien Enemy Act, Sect Act, stops criticism support
and free speech, Jefferson and Madison declare states rights to nullify an act
of Congress. The Alien Sedition acts cause Adams reelection.
