Introduction

The enclosed article, “First Steps in Banking”, was originally

published in the April 3, 1957, issue of the famed British satire
magazine Punch. Its question and answer parody would be positively
absurd, if not for the fact that it is positively accurate. And when the
absurd is accurate, it is shrewd to be curious. This 50th Anniversary
edition offers a curious look at the seeds of today’s credit based, debt
burdened, financial system. With a derivatives market of $415 trillion,
a U.S. National Debt that has topped $8.8 trillion, and where “liquidity”
is routinely “injected” into the system by the central banks of the
world, even the most curious observer can hardly begin to imagine the
hanky-panky behind the scenes from which it has spawned. It is
accurate to say, however, that whatever it is, it is exceedingly,
excessively, and exceptionally absurd.
