    The Revolution of 1800

    It is the first time power changed from one party to another peacefully. Jeffer-
    son is the first to do both in Washington. Madison is secretary of state Albert
    Gallatine is secretary of treasury.

    Marbury vs Madison

    The Midnight Judges were Adam’s last act of power. Marbury demands Jeffer-
    son and Madison give him his appointment, they don’t. It goes to the su-
    preme court. John Marshes ruling is that Marbury deserves his job but Mar-
    bury can’t have it. The act that made those positions was the judiciary act
    was illegal and the second reason was that one branch of government can’t
    serve another.

    Barbary Pirates

    The American Revolution removes protection from America. We blockade Tri-


    paly in response to piracy. Stephen Decatur gets victory for America. Amer-
    ica get prestige, America pays less.

    Louisiana Purchase

    France regains LA. Toussaint 'Overture defeats France in Haiti; stops French
    interest in new colonies in America. America’s mission is to buy New Orleans.
    Jefferson’s concern was it’s legality. He wants to make an amendment. He
    acts fast and it becomes a battle again. Strict vs Elastic. He pays 15 million
    for LA. We want to explore the North West and see the Pacific.

    Lewis and Clark

    Leave in 1804 over 1 1/2 years they explore LA. Sacajawea helps, she is a
    shoshoni girl. She is help in translating and geography, she speaks many nat-
    ive tongues, the presence of her child shows the groups peaceful intentions.
