Abstract

The high cost of generation of electricity through fossil fuels, its drastic effects to the
environment and the ozone layer led to people utilizing sources of Renewable Energy.
Some of sources of Renewable Energy are Solar, Wind, Geothermal, Wave Energy and
Biomass.

This paper highlights power generation through wind in Fiji and specifically the Butoni
wind farm. Fiji is famous for its long hours of sunshine and South East Trade winds. The
analysis of Butoni wind farm will provide ample information to the future developers and
Independent Power Producers (IPP) to invest in these types of projects.

The analysis is on the basis of facts and figures provided by Fiji Electricity Authority
(FEA). The useful periodical data on the wind speed and amount of energy generated by
the turbine is thoroughly analyzed. Furthermore, the principle of operation, cost of
maintenance and the viability of the project has been emphasized. Also it takes a closer
look at the future enhancements to the current. The ideas for a well oriented wind farm
have been highlighted for future energy generators and projects.
