Math Lesson plan # 1

Half of a Whole

Purpose of Lesson/ Skill:

Students will be learning how much ½ of a whole is.

Objectives:

 Students will be able to shade half of a whole

 Students will be able to pick out a ½ section from a while when using
manipulatives

Activities for Acquiring Lesson

I will teach my students what ½ is first by asking students if they know what ½ is.
We will then discuss their ideas as a class.
 I will then draw a circle on the board and shade in half of the circle and
explain I am shadding half of a whole circle.
 I will then take an apple and cut it in half and show I had one whole apple
but if I cut it in half I now have 2 halves.
 I will then put the apple back together and take it back apart to show how
a whole becomes a half.
 I will then split students into groups and they would do the same activities.
I would have them shade different shapes such as, Circles squares and
rectangles.
 After shading have students practice making a half using an apple just as
I did ( use a very dull knife)
 After practicing making ½ with an apple have students practice using an
Oreo cookie, when they pull it apart it makes half a cookie.
Materials:
 Oreos
 Apples
 Pencils
 Paper
 Crayons

Assess/Evaluate:

To evaluate my students I will give them various shapes on a work sheet and have them
shade half of the shape.

Adjustments/ Re-teach

If my students do not understand what ½ of a whole is I will reteach the concepts using
more and different manipulatives and I will have students who do understand the
concept help the students who may be struggling.
