1. Calculate the modulus of rigidly and bulk modulus of a cylindrical bar of diameter 30 mm and of
length 1.5 m if the longitudinal strain in a bar during a tensile stress is four times the lateral strain.
Find the change in volume, when the bar is subjected to a hydrostatic pressure of 100 N/mm2 . Take
E = 1 × 105 N/mm2 .
[16]
2. A tensile load of 60 kN is gradually applied to a circular bar of 4 cm diameter and 5 m long. If the value
of E = 2.0 × 105 N/mm2 , determine: Stretch in the rod, Stress in the rod, Strain energy absorbed by
the rod. [16]
3. A cantilever of length 5 m carries a gradually varying load, zero at the free end to 2.5 kN/m at the
fixed end. Draw the S.F. and B.M. diagrams for the cantilever.
[16]
4. Two circular beams where one is solid of diameter D and other is a hollow of outer diameter Do and
inner diameter Di are of the same length, same material and of same weight. Find the ratio of section
modulus of these circular beams. [16]
5. A rolled steel joist 300 mm deep and 200 mm wide has flanges 15 mm thick and web 12 mm thick.
Calculate the proportion in which the flange and web resist
(a) B.M.
(b) Shear force. [16]
6. A steel Cantilever of 2.5m effective length carries a load of 25 kN at its free end. If the deflection at
the free end is not to exceed 0.5 cm, what must be the I value of the section of the cantilever? Use
Moment Area Method.
Take E = 210 GN/m2 . [16]
7. A boiler is subjected to an internal steam pressure of 2 N/mm2 . The thickness of boiler plate is 2.6
cm and permissible tensile stress is 120 N/mm2 . Find out the maximum diameter, when efficiency of
longitudinal joint is 90% and that of circumferential joint is 40%. [16]
8. Prove that the original difference in radii at the junction of a compound cylinder for shrinkage is given
by
dr∗ = 2r∗ /E (a1 − a2 )
where, r∗ = Common radius after shrinking, E = Young’s modulus a1 and a2 = Constants whose
values are obtained from the boundary conditions. [16]
