Astronomical

Observatories

The
 Antarctic
 Continent
 provides
 exceptional
 conditions
 for
 Astronomical

Observations.

A
 project
 to
 build
 a
 2.5
 metre
 aperture
 telescope
 aimed
 to
 map
 repeatedly

large
 sky
 areas
 in
 the
 infrared
 at
 an
 unprecedented
 depth
 and
 angular

resolution
called
the
Polar
Large
Telescope
is
currently

in
progress.

This
telescope
will
discover
the
most
distant
galaxies,
the
first
generations
of

stars,
stars
in
formation,
it
will
help
to
understand
the
nature
of
dark
matter

and
dark
energy
and
to
characterize

planets
orbiting
around
stars.
