Self-Balanced!

Recent discoveries indicate that Earth’s Moon is shrinking. Another finding has revealed that
Moon is moving away from the Earth at the rate of approximately 3.8 cm (about 1½ inches) per
year.

Using the data taken by LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter), scientists have concluded that the
Moon’s diameter has shrunk by 9144 cm over the last 1 billion years. This is 9.144 × 10-6 cm per
year. The distance between the Moon and the Earth is approximately 3.84403 x 1010
centimeters. So, the final result will be an increase in distance between the Earth and Moon by
3.7999999 cm.

We all know that the tides on Earth are caused by the Moon’s gravitational pull. But as the
distance between the Earth and Moon increases, the gravitational pull becomes lesser. So,
there will be a decrease in the vertical displacement of tides from the Earth.

This will not happen overnight or even in 10 years. It can be estimated that it will take around
100 years for a slightly significant change to take place (about 0.3% decrease).

Also, the sea level is steadily increasing by around 2.1 – 2.2 mm per year averagely. There has
been a steady but differential (a very little amount) increase in this value due to global
warming. In 100 years, if it continues at the same rate, then there will be an increase of 220
mm in the sea level.

Then, if the moon hasn’t moved away, the high tides would be really violent and there will be a
lot of damage to human life and property. Since the moon will move away and there will be a
significant decrease in the gravitational pull, we might be saved from the furious high tides!

Isn’t this an ingenious design by God/Nature?

1. G is the universal gravitational constant

2. Me is the Mass of the Earth
3. Mm is the Mass of the Moon

1. G is the universal gravitational constant

2. Me is the Mass of the Earth
3. Mm is the Mass of the Moon
4. R is the current mean distance between the Moon and the Earth

If we take n=2 (100 years), then the ratio will be = 1.003

Then, there will be a decrease of about 0.3% in the Gravitational pull.
