A STUDY ON THE ORGANIZATIONAL CLIMATE OF

INDIAN OIL CORPORATION LIMITED (IOCL)

ABSTRACT

This paper critically reviews one of the most important but least understood
concepts in management – Organizational climate. A healthy organization is the one
in which an obvious effort is made to get people with different backgrounds, skills,
and abilities to work together toward the goal or purpose of the organization. While
we have not accomplished this at a societal level, it is still achievable at an
organizational level. Very few organizations in India have become efficient in
incorporating culturally diverse backgrounds, skills, and abilities in their
organizational culture.

An effective, culturally diverse organization is one whose culture is inclusive of

all of the varying groups and constituencies it intends to serve. The organization’s
values, mission, policies, procedures, norms constitute a culture that is manifested in
multiple perspectives and adaptability to varying values, beliefs, and communication
styles.

The project entitled A STUDY ON THE ORGANIZATIONAL CLIMATE IN

IOCL was done at INDIAN OIL CORPORATION LIMITED. IOCL is a public sector
company and the main theme of this project is to assess the efficiency and
effectiveness of the people and their work quality in IOCL.

Organizational climate is estimated by conducting surveys and collecting data

from the officers of IOCL units, in Chennai. Direct interactions with the officers gave
a clear-cut idea of the work procedures and norms that goes around the workplace. A
questionnaire of about 20 questions is prepared based on all the constraints that come
under Organizational climate and they are given to the middle-level managers in
IOCL. Based on the data gathered, the analysis is done using statistical tools such as
SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) and Percentages analysis method. The
final result shows that the organization is effective in terms of people and operations
done.
