Lesson Plan – Figures of speech

Subject: English Grammar

Unit title: Figures of speech.

Grade level: Grade 9

Learning objectives: Students will learn how figures of speech such as simile, metaphor,
personification and alliteration make texts more realistic and interesting.

Resources: Handouts of “I wandered lonely as a cloud” by William Wordsworth.

Teaching procedure

1. The teacher will begin the lesson with a few examples such as
 I'm so busy trying to accomplish ten million things at once. - I'm trying to accomplish
several things at one time.
 He writes a fine hand - It means he has good handwriting.
2. The teacher will then link the examples and introduces the unit- Figures of speech.
3. The teacher will explain that English is a figurative language and will elaborate upon the
difference between literal language and figurative language with the help of examples.
4. The teacher will give the definition of Figures of speech and introduces the 20 most
commonly used figures of speech explaining figures of speech like simile, metaphor,
personification and alliteration in detail with examples.
5. The teacher will further conduct controlled practice and identify the figures of speech
appearing in the poem “I wandered lonely as a cloud” by William Wordsworth along
with the children.
6. The teacher will then conduct free practice by breaking the class in groups of two and
letting them identify the figures of speech in passage two of the poem followed by a
group discussion.
7. The teacher will then give the remaining passages to the children for homework.
