GENRATIONS

Generation indicates the type of technology used in the

design and construction of computer.
Design and construction changes with the passage of
time.
These changes in technology are recognized as computer
generations.
5 Generations.

1ST GENERATION(1942-1955)

 Used by the Scientists, Engineers and Military and no

use in business.
 Vacuum tubes were used to control and amplify
signals.
 Large size due to which they were not portable and
were unreliable.
 Produce a large amount of Heat.
 Perform only simple calculation but speed is slow.
 Examples are ENIAC, UNIVAC , Mark-1.

2nd GENERATION(1955-1964)

Transistors were used instead of Vacuum

Tubes.
Smaller, faster and accurate than previous
generation’s computers .
Less heat generated.
Memory increases.
Examples are IBM 7090 series, IBM 1400
Series and UNIVAC III.

3rd GENERATION(1964-1975)
 IC’s (Integrated Circuits).
 10-20 circuits on one chip.
 Circuits are called SSI (Small Size Integration).
 Better Portability.
 Business Applications.
 Commercial use become easier.
 Smaller, Faster and Reliable.
 Examples are IBM 360, IBM 370, UNIVAC 9000.

4th GENERATIONS (1975-Present)
LSI (Large Scale Integration) and VLSI (Very
Large Scale Integration).
1000’s of Circuits on one chip.
Micro chip Technology introduced.
Smaller, Faster and Portable.
More internal storage capacity.
Examples are IBM, Apple, Compaq Deskpro
586.
