Chapter One Homework

#39: In Science, a change of mind can be seen as a positive step on the path to determining the real
truth by dispelling a formerly held conclusion in light of new evidence that contradicts the old theories.

#41: A Scientific Hypothesis is a suggested explanation for observable phenomena applied only when it
can be tested through experiments, while a Scientific Theory is a well tested hypothesis that unites a
vast range of observations within the natural world.

#45: Reproducibility is important in Science because it builds greater support for a scientist’s theory
when others can repeat the experiment and derive the same results.

#46: A theory becomes stronger the more it is modified to account for experimental evidence because
as more evidence is gathered it yields a more thoroughly examined and therefore more true theory.

#49: Medicines are being found in drinking supply waters of people in downstream communities. This
happens when people who have taken the medicines and passed them through their bodies in the
form of feces or urine and then flushed down the toilets, leading to polluted water for downstream
communities.
