GOOD RESUME > Is short. A wordy resume suggests a wordy person. Professionally prepared resumes often lack credibility with employers. It is up to you to KNOW THE CONTENT of YOUR resume. Rev. 10/04 RESUME TIPS > START WITH AN “OBJECTIVE”. An objective — stated at the very top of your resume ~ becomes the central focus from which all other elements in your resume should flow. The objective gives the resume organization and coherence. It tells employers exactly who you are in terms of your goals and skills. Without ‘an objective, you force the employer to “interpret” your resume and assume the position you may be interested in. Few employers will do this. Do not rely on 2 cover letter to express your objective. Most employers, particularly in Personnel and Human Resource offices, will tell you that quite often resumes and cover letters are separated. This resuls in having a cover letter, but no resume, of a resume without a cover letter or objective. Bottom line - you won't be seen! ’ > NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER USE PERSONAL PRONOUNS in your resume. The most used and abused is the pronoun ‘I,’ with others being me, my, myself, we, they, our, ete. > NEVER, NEVER, NEVER go over two pages. Over 98 percent of resumes can and should be limited to ONE PAGE ONLY!!! > DNA ~DO NOT ABBREVIATE!! > DO NOT list references nor make reference to references in your resume. In other words, the statement at the bottom of most resumes, “References provided upon request” adds no value to YOU. Employers rightfully assume that if they request references, you will provide them. Putting this statementin your resume only tells them something they assume already and does not SELL you. Use this space to mention you are “Dependable, flexible, professional, friendly and outgoing, enjoy helping others, dedicated, loyal, etc.” These words "SELL" you! P DO NOT ty to cram too much information into your resume, Most job seekers say too much, thinking they are selling themselves. Your resume should be like a one-page advertising flyer. Telling an employer you are ‘computer literate” will make them wonder just how computer literate you are, To find out, they need to contact you and ask. That is exactly what you want your resume to achievell! > DO NOT SHOTGUN RESUMES. One generic resume seldom works effectively. For your resume to be effective, you should find out as much as you can about the company and the position you are applying for before preparing and sending them a resume. In other words, TARGET a position in their company. They may use a different title for the same position found in the business next door! The more you know about the ‘company and the positions within that company, the better prepared you will be in using your resume to create "matches" between yourself and what you have to offer them and what they are looking for in an employes. Remember, the position does not need to be open for you to get the interest of the employer! Think of WHAT YOU DID (objects worked on, goods and/or services produced); HOW YOU DID IT (with what equipment? / by what method? / with what materials?); WHY YOU DID IT (job as a whole, purpose); and WHAT WAS INVOLVED ~ QUANTIFY (speed / accuracy / volume / number supervised) in analyzing the jobs you have had.
