Policy:
Thermometers should be calibrated routinely and as needed (i.e.; after extreme temperature change, or after
dropping) to ensure accurate measurement of temperatures.

Policy Explanation and Compliance Guidelines

I. Calibration:

Thermometers can be calibrated using either of the following procedures:

a. Prepare a 50/50 ice and water mixture. Submerge the sensor/probe of the thermometer in the
solution until the needle stops moving. Use a small wrench to turn the calibration nut until
the thermometer reads 32 degrees Fahrenheit, or

b. Use the boiling point method by submerging the sensor/probe into boiling water until the needle
stops moving. Use a small wrench to turn the calibration nut until the thermometer reads 212
degrees Fahrenheit.

*If using a thermocouple or digital thermometer, replace the battery or have the thermometer serviced.
Perform hot or cold calibration technique to test accuracy of temperature reading
