Gift Card Problem

Your grandmother gives you a $100 iTunes gift card for your
birthday. You plan to use the gift card to purchase individual
songs @ $1.29 and movies @ $14.99. Let x be the number of songs
you purchase with the gift card, and let y be the number of movies
you purchase with the gift card
1. Write an expression for the total number of dollars deducted
from your gift card for songs and movies that you download.
_________________________________

2. Evaluate your expression to determine how much money has been deducted from your gift card for
downloading:
a) 48 songs and 1 movie; _________

b) 17 songs and 3 movies. _________

3. Using your expression from #1, write an equation stating that the total number of dollars from downloading
songs and movies equals the amount on the gift card.

4. Find the x- and y-intercepts of your equation in #3, and then use them to sketch the graph of the equation on
the coordinate grid below. * Remember what is needed to create a coordinate system:
1) A starting point; 2) Two reference lines (with scales and labels); 3) Directions for each reference line.
5. a) What is the x-intercept: ________. Interpret the real-world meaning of the x-intercept.

b) What is the y-intercept: ________. Interpret the real-world meaning of the y-intercept.

c) Interpret the real-world meaning of the coordinates of each point on your line.

6. a) Find three different combinations of songs and movies you can download that will not exceed the
amount on the gift card. (Remember only whole numbers of songs and movies can be downloaded,
so x and y must be nonnegative integers.)
( ____, ____ ) ( ____, ____ ) ( ____, ____ )

b) On the coordinate grid, plot the point for each ordered pair of these three combinations.
For each point, explain why it lies on/above/below your line.

7. What combination of songs and movies would you download to make the most of your gift card?
Give numerical evidence to justify your answer.
