Anterior guidance, condylar guidance, difference and relationship of these two angles were
investigated in normal occlusion and skeletal type I, II and III using two hundred and forty lateral
cephalometric radiographs comprising 30 males and 30 females in each group.
The following are the findings of the study.
1. Anterior guidance was steeper than condylar guidance in all groups.
2. In all groups, there are positive correlation between anterior guidance and long axis of the
upper central incisor, condylar guidance and condylar axis, anterior guidance and condylar guidance.
3. In total subjects condylar guidance correlated positively with ANB and WITS but negatively
with SNB. In skeletal type II and III, condylar guidance was correlated positively with overbite and
negatively with open skeletal configuration.
4. In all groups, anterior guidance had no sexual dimorphism. Condylar guidance in males was
steeper than in females in all groups except normal occlusion. The difference of anterior and condylar
guidance in females was more than in males in skeletal type III group.
5. There was no significant difference in the different value between anterior guidance and
condylar guidance among normal occlusion and the three skeletal patterns. The study also found that
there was significant difference in condylar guidance among normal occlusion and the three skeletal
patterns. The trend of the steepness of the condylar guidance range from steep to shallow was skeletal
type I,II and III, respectively.
