Morphine

Indication
-severe pain
Action
-binds with opiate receptors in the CNS, altering perception of and emotional response to pain
Adverse effects
-seizures, somnolence, hallucinations, light-headedness, hypotension, tachycardia, dry mouth, vomiting,
nausea, constipation
Contraindication
- hypersensitivity to drug, patients with GI obstruction
Patient teaching
-reassess pain level 30 minutes after
-keep opioid antagonist at bedside (NALOXONE)
- monitor circulatory, respiratory, bladder, and bowel functions—may cause respiratory depression,
hypotension, urine retention, nausea, vomiting
-withhold dose if RR is below 12
-give without regard to food
-swallow whole

Indications
-Treatment of acute diarrhea w/ duration of ≤14 days due to infections, drugs or poisons or for chronic or
persistent diarrhea w/ duration of >14 days.

Cefuroxime
I-skin infection , uncomplicated UTI
A-second-generation cephalosporin that inhibits cell-wall synthesis, promoting osmotic instability, bactericidal
AE-nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, thrombocytopenia
PT-may be dissolved in small amount of juice
-take with food
-notify if with rash

Metronidazole
I-pelvic inflammatory disease, trichomoniasis, bacterial infections
A-enter the cells of microorganisms that contain nitroreductase, forming unstable compounds that bind to DNA and
inhibit synthesis, causing cell death
AE-fever, vertigo, headache, ataxia, confusion, edema, flushing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
PT-give with meals
-monitor liver function test result
-record number and character of stools
-metallic taste
-red-brown urine
