ASSIGNMENT 2
DUE DATE: 22.11.10
MARK: 5 % OF FINAL MARK
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

1. A circular disc heater 0.2 m in diameter is exposed to ambient air at 250C. One surface of the
disc is insulated and other surface is maintained at 1300C. Calculate the amount of heat
transferred from the disc when it is (i) horizontal with hot surface facing up, (ii) horizontal with
hot surface facing down and, (iii) vertical.

2. Two identical counter flow type heat exchangers are available. Water at the rate of 3600 kg/h
and at 300C (Cp=4.2 kJ/kg. K) is to be heated by cooling an oil (Cp = 2.1 kJ/kg. K) at 900C. The
oil flow rate is 2700 kg/h. The heat transfer area in each heat exchanger is 4 m2. The heat
exchangers are connected in series on the water side and in parallel on the oil side. The oil flow
rate is split in the ratio of 2 to 1 i.e., 1800 kg/h in the first and 900 kg/h in the second heat
exchanger. Water enters the first heat exchangers at 300C. Find the final water and oil exit
temperatures. Overall heat transfer coefficient in each heat exchanger is 300 W/m2.K.

3. In a glass making process, a plate of glass 0.5 m X 2 m and 3 mm in thickness is cooled by

blowing hot air with velocity 1 m/s in direction parallel to plate, such that the rate of cooling is
slow. The initial glass plate temperature is 4250C and hot air temperature is 2000C. Estimate:
i) Initial rate of cooling in 0C/min.
ii) Time required for cooling from 4250C to 3750C
Assume properties of glass as ρ = 2500 kg/m3, C = 0.76 kJ/kg. K. Assume that air flow takes
place on both sides of plate.

4. Consider a large plane wall of thickness L =0.4 m, thermal conductivity k =2.3 W/m · °C, and
surface area A =20 m2. The left side of the wall is maintained at a constant temperature of 80°C,
while the right side loses heat by convection to the surrounding air at T∞ =15°C with a heat
transfer coefficient of h =24 W/m2 · °C. Assuming steady one dimensional heat transfer and
taking the nodal spacing to be 10 cm, (a) obtain the finite difference formulation for all nodes,
(b) determine the nodal temperatures by solving those equations, and (c) evaluate the rate of
heat transfer through the wall.

NOTE:
Do the problems in a systematic way.
Include the units in the calculation.
State any assumptions.
