Resolution
A Resolution supporting HB 2556 relating to the transfer
of the University of Houston-Victoria to the Texas A& M University System;
WHEREAS the projected growth of a four year destination university in Victoria that serves over 15 counties is expected to
realize enrollment figures to reach over 5,000 students by the year 2019-2020, pressing the need for definitive planning for
facility and program growth; and
WHEREAS the University of Houston system aspires to become a leading metropolitan university system in the nation thus
reducing priority for serving smaller community campuses; and
WHEREAS the establishment of a destination university campus in Victoria will bring opportunity for higher education
attainment to the increasing student population including the underrepresented students in our state, resulting in a more
educated workforce and helping to secure the competitive edge in business recruitment for the State of Texas; and
WHEREAS Texas A & M University system, one of the nation’s largest systems of higher education, is an established Tier 1
system with a proven reputation for commitment to serving the expanding student population in Texas by successfully
operating destination university campuses in smaller communities; and
WHEREAS State Representative Geanie Morrison has filed HB 2556 to bring the goal of establishing a local destination
university campus to Victoria, thereby placing accessible higher education within reach of thousands of Texas students, and
helping to fulfill the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s plan to ‘Close the Gaps by 2015’.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Directors does hereby support Texas State Representative Geanie
Morrison’s HB 2556 for moving the University of Houston – Victoria to the Texas A & M University system.
