Traffic automation technologies can be categorized into four groups: warning systems, control assistance systems, control override systems, and automated control systems. These systems use either autonomous technologies contained entirely within the vehicle like GPS and sensors, or cooperative technologies combining in-vehicle and infrastructure elements like painted road markings and dedicated traffic servers. Traffic automation aims to solve longstanding transportation problems by improving communication between vehicles and enabling server-controlled routing through automatic vehicle control systems.

The modern transportation system came into existence during the
mid-nineteenth century. Even a century and a half later still many
problems are associated with them e.g. traffic congestion, road safety, etc. The reason, “confusion between vehicle operators” due to “lack of effective communication” and only solution is traffic automation.
Traffic automation technologies and systems can be described in four
categories:
Warning systems. Control assistance systems. Control override systems. Automated control systems.
These systems may be implemented by technology that is entirely
contained within the vehicle (i.e., autonomously) or by combinations of in-vehicle and infrastructure technologies (i.e., cooperatively).
Autonomously:-
PID (Proportional Integral Derivative) control system to determine the
motion of vehicles. GPS device to track the path. SONAR for avoiding obstacles. Inbuilt Wi-Fi module to communicate with other vehicles and the traffic server.
Cooperatively:-
UV sensitive paints on white strips of the road for detection of track
during night. Dedicated Server for vehicle traffic automation. Vehicle warning systems includes warning the vehicle on approach of vehicle, overtaking, giving way for priority vehicles, etc. Control assistance system is the process of aiding the manual controller (if activated) to the various parameters on road. Control override includes transfer of control of the vehicle to the server, overriding manual control. Lastly the automated control systems include the complete automated control of the vehicle from source to destination through the server.
