Annie Oakley

Annie Oakley (1860-1926) was a famous American sharpshooter. A sharpshooter is a good

shot—a person who can shoot guns very well. Oakley starred in Buffalo Bill's Wild West
show for 16 years. Her husband, Frank Butler, worked with her. During her act, she would
shoot a small coin out of his hand.

Annie Oakley was born Phoebe Ann Moses in Darke County, Ohio. She learned to shoot
when she was 8 years old. She made money for her family by hunting and selling what she
shot.

In 1901, Oakley was hurt in a train accident and had to leave the Buffalo Bill show. During
World War I (1914-1918), she taught American soldiers how to shoot. In her free time, she
liked to do needlepoint, a kind of embroidery.
