Your Line
STC's Line

Your DSL line is made of two parts, as seen in the diagram above.
1- The STC line from the network to the Distribution Point on your wall.
2- Your line from the Distribution Point to the modem.

4
Information on Internal Wiring:
1- Protected Distribution Point
There are several types of Distribution Points used by STC. They are either
fitted to the house, building wall or possibly to the perimeter wall. They all
have one set of contacts from the STC line and parallel to these are the
contacts for your line.
When fitting your line to the Distribution Point you should always
ensure that:
- Wire should be firmly gripped by Correct Incorrect
the contact.
- Contacts should be clean.
- Distribution Point should be kept
closed after installation.
Once you connect your cable
please ensure that the weather
protection cover or lid is replaced
and secured. Exposure to weather
will cause corrosion of the
contacts and this will reduce the
quality of your line and any other
lines from the Distribution Point.
* If the Distribution Point does not have a cover or is damaged,
please contact 907.

5
2- The Cables
The cable used from the Distribution Point must be of the right size and quality.
You need to use a CAT 5 cable with a strong outer sheath for protection.
If a CAT cable is not available, please make sure you use a good twisted pair
cable. The diameter of the wire should be 0.5mm. Only single wires should be
connected to each terminal, and any extra wires should be trimmed and left
unconnected.
STC LINE YOUR LINE
Note:
- Do not connect more than one
wire to each contact.
- Do not use a standard
electrical or bell wire.

Your wires connecting

to the Distribution Point outside
your house should always be
kept seperate and straight
to improve line quality
(see illustration).

Remember
Close distribution point
after installation

6
3- From the Distribution Point to Your Home
The cable from the Distribution Point to the socket in your home
should be kept as short as possible and secured to the wall to prevent
movement. It is important to also keep the cable in the shade as much as
possible.
If possible, cables outside should be buried to keep it cool and prevent
disturbance. High temperatures cause the resistance of the wire to
increase and reduce your DSL signal.

• Modem/Router - used to transmit and
receive data from your computer to the
website you are on. It is also the method
by which you can use the internet
wirelessly.

• Splitter - used to ensure there is no

interference between your telephone and
the internet connection.

Please note that laptops that offer wireless access do not require
the ethernet connection.

8
To install your modem please follow the following steps:

Modem location
Before installing your modem/router it is important you pick a suitable
spot for it.

Please consider the following:

• Keep the modem/router centralized so you don’t loose speed
due to walls.
• Keep all cable lengths short.
• Keep at least 30 cm away from any electrical cables.
• Secure cables to the wall with the correct fasteners.
• Use the splitter at the first point in which the cable enters the house.
• Your modem can be accessed for a distance of up to 50 meters.
• For optimal usage you should stay as close as possible to the modem
and the more barriers in place, such as walls, the weaker your wireless
signal will be.
