Next week in Religion …
We will begin Chapter 17 of Unit 5. Chapter 17,
“Jesus’ Followers Become the Church.” The test for
Chapter 17 will be on Friday, May 6th. The first
grade is responsible for the Mass readings on May
12th. If your child brings home a reading, please
practice with him or her. I appreciate it very much,

Next week in Reading/Phonics …
We will continue reading The Gift. It focuses on the
use of the word families ind, old, ost, and ild. Often
these words are pronounced with a long vowel sound,
even though the syllable is closed.
Next week in Spelling …
The spelling words for Friday, May 6th are: joined,
enjoy, soil, voice, point, boy, oil, toy, coin, boil,
*very, *could These words have neither the long or
short vowel sounds but have an unexpected sound.
We call these Diphthongs.

Next week in Math…
We will begin Chapter 8, “Place Value Data and Graphs.”
The children will be counting, writing, and ordering
numbers with digits in the ones place, tens place, and
hundreds place. They will also be comparing numbers
using the greater than, less than, and equal to symbols
(>, <, =).
Next week in Social Studies/Science…
In Social Studies we will complete Unit 5, “This is Our
Country.” The test for Unit 5 will be Friday, May
6th. In Science we will complete our investigation of
matter. The Science test on Matter will be
Thursday, May 5th.
Next week in English/Handwriting …
The children will be checking out a non-fiction book
from the library on Tuesday. The children will be
learning how to write a “research report.” We will use
these books in class to help us locate facts about
different topics.
