BESPAK invited IP & Copyright speaker to delivered a lecture at College of

Media and Arts in PAF KIET city campus

Event Summary

On 11TH April 11, the Media Sciences class of PAF-KIET got an opportunity to interact with a professional in the field of Intellectual
Property (IP). A guest speaker session was arranged to enlighten the students about the issues they may face with regards to IP
while creating their works both in academic and professional lives. The speaker holds a Masters degree in Business Administration
and a Masters degree in Intellectual Property and Competition Law from a University in Germany. He is currently pursuing his
Doctorate in the same field.

The session focused on Copyrights within the field of IP. The speaker introduced Copyrights to the class and discussed the concept of
idea/expression dichotomy. The lesson for the students was to understand that copyright protection is only available for expression
of an idea and not for the idea itself. This means that one idea can be expressed in many different ways and all the expressions are
protected by copyrights provided that they are 'original' i.e.', they are not copied from somewhere else. As the students had minimal
or no previous legal education, the speaker did not delve into the nitty-gritty of current legal situation in Pakistan with regards to
copyrights.

The idea was to inform the students how they can enrich their creativity by making sure that they are not infringing someone else's
copyrighted work. At the same time, they were also informed about their own right as a creator in their creations. In the second part
of the presentation, the speaker introduced the concept of Creative Commons to the class. Creative Commons refers to a licensing
scheme where creators allow others to copy, distribute and even commercialize their works given the user fulfills certain conditions
of the license.

The discussion, which went well beyond the stipulated time of one-hour, was kept lively by the active participation of the students.
At the end of the session, HOD Jamshed Butt & CM BESPAK Bilal Hasan presented the speaker with a memorabilia on behalf of PAF-
KIET.
