DSBCP participation at ECAI Workshops

Miroj Shakya, DSBC Project Coordinator has participated ECAI Workshop at Hong
Kong Science Centre, City University of Hong Kong on May 27-30, 2010. The theme of
the workshop is “Visual Analytics for Humanities and Arts: Charting the Course.” It is
hosted by Centre for Creative Media and Department of Chinese Translation
Linguistics.
The focus of this workshop was to plan the collaboration between ECAI and the CUHK
Sponsoring Units. The process of visualizing data for pattern recognition including the
potential of immersive environments is a research goal of the institutions. We have
discussed about how to deal with a range of data including textual, archaeological, and
cultural heritage materials.
The workshop members have seen the new immersive lab theatres just being
constructed by the Centre for Creative Media which is one of the main attractions of this
workshop.

Shakya has attended another workshop at Fudan University, Shanghai on May 30-
June 2, 2010. The theme of the workshop is “Cultural Atlas Construction and Planning.”
Sponsored by Library and Department of Geography of Fudan University, Shanghai.
The workshop was an open to institutions that are either in the planning stage for
Cultural Atlas construction or have already begun the actual work. This workshop has
given a platform to the beginners to show their own projects and open the door to
collaborate with other members of different projects. A focus was on “Religious Atlases
of Asia” including the proposed new project to explore seaports and maritime
archaeology.
The workshop members have visited a one-day tour of the exciting Shanghai
EXPO 2010.
